#### Fixed vs. Growth: The Two Basic Mindsets That Shape Our Lives
I think we as a culture have the idea that intelligence is a static quality of an individual. We are born with traits which make
us rise above the rest or keep us beneath others. While I think there are some fixed thresholds for each individual abilities, we
may never know this unless we give lots of effort into our endeavors. **Fixed mindsets** only focus on winning or losing and
critique themselves by these two qualities. **Growth mindsets** see learning and failure as growth opportunities. Growth mindsets
don't get discouraged by failure or hyper-elated by a win. There objective is to learn and grow.
I have felt fixed before as far as debugging code is concerned. Thoughts might rush through my head when I am working on a problem
that I am not smart enough to figure out the problem. But when I took the growth attitude that in every situation coding
is a growth-minded activity, I seem to do much better. I feel fixed at times in debugging and then overcome my fears and dogma
by thinking in a growth minded way.
The difficulties of this course will be the time factor. I enjoy being with my family and I will have to juggle that
responsibility during the week. I may feel a little lonely at times. When I have felt crunched by deadlines and committments
I promise myself to take a good vacation when the episode ends. And that is just what I told my wife we must do; take a vacation
when I am through with the studies.
#### What is Code | |
I was surprised by reading the history of computer development. How Dell is now privatized because it hasn't worked well. Also
that Facebook builds its own servers intstead of buying them through a third party. I was also a little surprised by how many different
departments can have an impact on software development and how many different platforms (both software and hardware) compete
against each other in companies. I though IT would be much more organized than what was portrayed in this essay. It seems like
some of the people are just making decisions on a whim. |
