Assess your habits from week 2: how did you spend your time this past week? What was effective in your habits? What could be more effective? What steps will you take to make that happen?
Feeling good about my habits over the past week. I was much more consistent about time blocking and setting aside time for breaks/personal/life stuff. Had a few heavy work days that felt neverending but in taking breaks I was able to push through. Last week I failed to meal prep for the week which severely impacted my week. So I spent Sunday being sure to meal prep for this big week of midterms. I'm going to try to maintain my good habits over break to help myself stay consistent and be able to start the second half of Mod 2 strongly with my good habits still in place.
- When have you been excited, focused, and enjoyed your work? When have you felt bored, restless, or unhappy? When do you feel energized in your work? When is your energy drained?
I the most energized by organization and creating a collaborative plan for a team, as well as solving problems that arise. I enjoy working with a team to create the best plan for our project and creating small, digestable, actionable steps forward. I also feel extremely energized by finding clever or tricky solutions to logic puzzles within project. Taking the time to sort through the details of a problem, thinking through potential solutions and find the one that works best for the given sitatuion gives me an amazingly accomplished feeling! Conversely, I feel drained when team cohesion is off, or I get particiularly blocked by a challenege. Luckily I can be quickly reenergized in these moments by reaching out for outside help (either from my mentor, rock, or fellow cohort mates). So I guess thats another aspect of what energizes me is having a community that supports my needs/questions.
- Block out time on your calendar this week to work on your job search. When will you make this happen? How will you hold yourself accountable to this? What activities will you focus on during this time this week? What outcomes do you hope to reach by the end of this week because of these activities?
I am going to spend some time Thursday Morning and maybe part of Friday morning working on some job hunting. I want to start by researching company cultures and finding places that match my values and culture desires. After finding those I will start to dive deeper into what those companies actually do/if that resonates with me. Beyond that I would probably start to look for Turing alumni that work there, or look through my personal network to try to find someone I know with a connection to begin to build my ties to the company.
- Go through the resources listed here and explore 2-3 tools. List what you looked at here:
KeyValues, BuiltIn, and LinkedIn seem like great choices for me.
- Apply wayfinding: of what you looked at, what did you discover that aligns with your vision? If it didn’t align with your vision, what will you try next? Decide what tools to bookmark to explore later.
I bookmarked a number of tools - i like that the Huntr extension can pull a job posting directly into my Huntr profile. Finding connections through linkedIn has proven to be very illuminating - I have many more connections in the tech industry than I thought I did.
- Find a job posting that aligns with your vision. What’s the posting? How does it align with what you’re looking for? Add it to your Huntr.
I found a posting for a job at Campspot for a Software Developer job. The parts of the job posting that caught my eye were the details about company culture and philosophy. Namely that they:
- "value diverse perspectives"
- "we are looking for someone who is always asking, learning and growing. Our dev team believes we are all both students and teachers."
- "Development at Campspot is heavy on collaboration. Developers are expected to collaborate with each other via technical design meetings, pair programming, and code reviews. Developers also collaborate directly with our product owners to scope, refine, and test features. Lastly, developers need to collaborate with our designers to create solid UX for new features in our app."
- And that their development uses lots of TDD (which I love!)
- What next steps will you take to explore that opportunity and find contacts? Add that information to your Huntr card.
I want to do a bit more research about the company and see if I can find any connections to the employees there.
