Hi Leonh, thank you for the correction, I've updated the code.
The problem with binary strings is solved by adding encoding=utf8
to the client connection constructor, while the second problem was definitely a mixup on my part when bouncing between aio-redis and redis-py.

Found this code to have a few problems on Mac py 3.7 with redis 5.0.5 . this worked for me https://gist.github.com/leonh/f2fa9e8adca48dcca6b52e525a2f441f
