Future-proofing your Ember 1.x code

This post is also on my blog, since Gist doesn't support @ notifications.

Components are taking center stage in Ember 2.0. Here are some things you can do today to make the transition as smooth as possible:

  • Use Ember CLI
  • In general, replace views + controllers with components
  • Only use controllers at the top-level for receiving data from the route, and use Ember.Controller instead of Ember.ArrayController or Ember.ObjectController
  • Fetch data in your route, and set it as normal properties on your top-level controller. Export an Ember.Controller, otherwise a proxy will be generated. You can use Ember.RSVP.hash to simulate setting normal props on your controller.

Spring + Rubymine
In shell:
export RUBYLIB=/path/to/RubyMine/rb/testing/patch/common:/path/to/RubyMine/rb/testing/patch/bdd
spring rspec spec/ # to launch spring server
In Rubymine:
Uncheck bundler
Select custom runner script as spring_rspec.rb
add same variable to environment variables:
RUBYLIB=/path/to/RubyMine/rb/testing/patch/common:/path/to/RubyMine/rb/testing/patch/bdd

Performace patch for ruby-1.9.3-p327

Changes:

  • this version includes backport of Greg Price's patch for speedup startup http://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/7158 .

ruby-core prefers his way to do thing, so that I abandon cached-lp and sorted-lf patches of mine.

  • this version integrates 'array as queue' patch, which improves performance when push/shift pattern is heavily used on Array.

This patch is accepted into trunk for Ruby 2.0 and last possible bug is found by Yui Naruse. It is used in production* for a couple of months without issues even with this bug.

ruby-1.9.3-p327 cumulative performance patch for rbenv

This installs a patched ruby 1.9.3-p327 with various performance improvements and a backported COW-friendly GC, all courtesy of funny-falcon.

Requirements

You will also need a C Compiler. If you're on Linux, you probably already have one or know how to install one. On OS X, you should install XCode, and brew install autoconf using homebrew.
