Types of transport data collected by local authorities and others

Manual roadside counts

Manual counting of traffic by people stood at the side of the road. Typically commissioned to run at a location or date for a specific project.

Will result in counts of traffic, possibly with type of vehicle

Manual roadside counts at intersections

Manual counting of traffic moving through a specific intersection. Using Turning Movement Counters (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turning_movement_counters)

Typically commissioned to run at a location or date for a specific project.

Will result in counts of traffic, along with turn directions, possibly with type of vehicle

ANPR Cameras

Automatic Number Platform Recognition cameras which will log registration numbers of cars travelling along a road.

Cameras might be permanent, e.g. as part of traffic speed enforcement, or temporary.

Radar Sensors

Radar sensors that can produce vehicle speeds and counts for a specific location.

Sensors might be permanent, or might be temporary. Some sensors are portable so could be used as part of manual counting.

Produces data on counts and speeds for a road, or perhaps individual lanes

Automated Traffic Counters

Automated data collection using a traffic counter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_count#Traffic_counter_devices) installed on the road.

Might be permanent or temporary.
