Caitlin's Ubuntu Handbook

Caitlin's Ubuntu Handbook

This laptop is called "asterope" and it is running "Ubuntu" rather than Windows. Here are some things you might need to know (and I can edit this document to add things when you have questions!). Beware that I had some power problems with this laptop so I don't know how long it will last. Turn it off when you aren't using it, and make sure you are using dropbox or google docs so that you won't lose anything if it does die!

First Principles

This laptop has a touch screen and the screen rotates so you can sort of fold it up with the screen facing outwards. This might be surprising.

Whatever you want to do, press the windows key and start typing. Alt+F4 closes windows, Alt+Tab switches between them, I think those are both the same as Windows

Turn off the computer by clicking on the down arrow in the very top right and choose the picture of a power button (or just press the actual power button in the middle of the keyboard at the top)

Running Programs

I've added Google Chrome, a Documents program and a Spreadsheet program to the "Favourites" which is the menu up the left hand side. The picture of a filing cabinet is where you find files and folders and things. The orange suitcase with an "A" is where you install new things (they might be called something weird though, just ask the housemates channel if you're stuck and one of us will know). The button with all the dots at the bottom left will show you all the installed applications.

Wifi Setup

Click on the icon to the left of the battery picture on the top right and enter the wifi details.

Docs and Spreadsheets

You might like to use Google Docs, but I've also installed Libreoffice so you can work with documents and spreadsheets. It should handle all the usual Microsoft Office features but let me know if there's anything missing.

Making it your own

Press the windows key and type "settings" to set desktops, colour schemes and other preferences. There's also a program called "Tweaks" that I think has prettier things in.
