WWDC Keynote 2018 Notes
Introduction | |
* App Store 10 years old this year
* Big push into the education space
* Everyone should learn to code
* All about software today (no hardware?)
iOS 12 | |
* Lots of stuff about how quickly iOS is adopted
* Obligatory Android burn
* High customer satisfaction
* Doubling down on performance, top to bottom
* Faster and more responsive
* iOS 12 supported by the same devices as iOS 11 (back to 2013)
* Faster launch times, faster keyboard appearance, faster camera
* Focus on optimising performance under load
* In other words, it’s iOS 12 “Snow Leopard”
* But that’s not all… | |
* Augmented Reality | |
* New file format for sharing AR content - USDZ
* Here comes somebody from Adobe to talk AR
* Adding support to Creative Cloud to allow users to use Photoshop etc. to create AR content
* New services and apps, including an iOS app, to make it easy to design AR experiences
* Promises AR WYSIWYG editing
* Sneak peek at Developer SOTU
* AR content can be embedded in News or websites
* Tap on embedded content to project it into real life using AR
* New app from Apple: Measure (Sherlock alert)
* Uses ARKit and makes it easy to measure things in real life
* Plane detection when measuring the box is really cool
* Can auto detect 2D shapes on a single plane (e.g. photo in a frame) and measure it
* ARKIt the largest augmented reality platform
* ARKIt 2.0 in iOS 12 | |
* Supports shared AR experiences across multiple devices (don’t know how practical this is in real life but the demo app looks really cool)
* As always I feel very aware that these AR demos look much cooler in the demos than in real life when you have to stand there holding up your device in front of you.
* Having said that, the Lego app looks pretty cool.
* Photos | |
* Lots of new search options
* New “For You” tab | |
* Sharing suggestions | |
* “Share back”, so people with photos of the same event can share to create a complete set
* All powered by on-device machine learning
* Siri | |
* Most used digital assistant in the world (but probably the shittiest too)
* Siri Shortcut: apps can expose new behaviour to Siri that you can add from the app, WITH YOUR OWN CUSTOM TRIGGER. FINALLY!
* Can now make suggestions based on repeat behaviour (e.g. order a coffee each morning, workout time at the gym). Running late for a meeting? Siri can suggest a message to send to the organiser. Automatically turn on DND in a meeting. Call Grandma on her birthday. Etc….
* USER-DEFINED SHORTCUTS!
* Uses a new Shortcuts app.
* Basically it’s Workflow, but integrated into the system.
* Built-in app changes | |
* News | |
* New sidebar | |
* Um…was that it? | |
* Stocks…zzzzzzzz | |
* Sparklines. Yay? | |
* Built-in news. | |
* Coming to iPad. | |
* Something something, I think I phased out.
* iBooks is now Apple Books. There might have been something else.
* Something something CarPlay…something something third-party navigation.
* OK, this bit is over now.
* New features to help with distraction/focus
* DND: Hide notifications at night to help you wind down
* Custom ending time when activating DND
* Better control over notifications - “instant tuning”, control your notification behaviour directly from the lock screen. Siri suggestions for disabling notifications if you don’t use apps much.
* Grouped notifications. Grouped by app/topic/thread. Can be managed as a group.
* Screen Time: Built-in activity reports, see how long you’re using your device.
* App Limits: control how long you spend using different apps.
* Usage synced across devices.
* Doesn’t seem to put a hard block on - more nudge theory.
* Also can be used on kids devices and shared data with parents - parents can create “allowances” to control how long children spend on devices.
* Downtime in the evening, limit access to apps.
* Built on top of Family Sharing. Can be managed remotely from parent device.
* Communication | |
* Messages up first. He’s talking about Animoji. 😴
* “Tongue Detection”. Yes, it does what you think.
* There’s some new Animojis, for those who care.
* One more thing…MEMOJI. Create your own personalised animjoi. It’s basically WiiMe for the iPhone generation.
* Demo time. | |
* “Fun” Effects in the messages camera.
* If you’ve used Facebook camera or Snapchat, it’s basically that. But in Messages.
* You can embed MeMojis too.
* Now on to FaceTime…promising a big leap forward.
* GROUP FACETIME KLAXON!
* Supports up to 32 participants (how does that work in practice?!)
* FaceTime integrated into Messages to make it easier to start a group FaceTime.
* UI looks interesting. Floating tiles that change size to reflect prominence in the call.
* Woody wins the demo with the Hair Force One poster.
* Supports Animoji/sticker packs/effects. Now it’s a bit creepy.
* No updates for Phone? Nobody loves Phone.
* Craig now summing up. | |
* Personal highlights for iOS 12: Siri improvements (if it works as advertised), some of the distraction/focus features look useful and group FaceTime are wins. And performance, looking forward to see how it feels on my iPhone 7.
* Tim’s back on the stage.
* Time to talk about APPLE WATCH
* Talking about the watch and it’s health features. “Active and connected” the headline.
* Time for Watch OS 5. | |
* Talking about sensor data and biometric information and how it integrates with the Activity rings on Apple Watch.
* Talking about workouts and gym equipment integration.
* New activity types: Yoga, Hiking. New features for runners.
* It feels like Apple’s ultimate goal is to make their own built-in features the go-to place for activity tracking rather than relying on one of the many third-party apps.
* New automatic workout detection. Detects both starting and stopping activities.
* Activity competitions.
* Now talking about connectivity.
* New option for communicating on the watch: “Walkie Talkie”. Voice combined with the brevity of messages. This looks pretty great, if your friends and family have Apple Watches of course. Works of cellular and wifi.
* Enhancements to Siri watch face. New content for the face.
* Also adding Siri shortcuts. Predictive shortcuts appear on the screen.
* Siri watch face now supports third party apps.
* No longer need to say “Hey Siri”, just raise your wrist and talk to Siri.
* More actionable and interactive notifications.
* WebKit integrated so you can view web content from mail and messages. Has reader modes. No dedicated browser though.
* Podcasts on the watch.
* Demo time. Live demo on an exercise bike (!)
* Summing up, lots of features on the screen. Highlighting Student ID cards. Nobody outside the US cares.
* New Pride watch band - cool - and matching watch face - also cool.
* Apple TV / tvOS next | |
* Recapping about Apple TV 4K. A mini sales pitch in other words.
* Adding Dolby Atmos support.
* Talking about all the content available in the TV App (again, if you’re in the US)
* Seriously - give me access to the kind of content I get from Sky TV on my Apple TV and I’ll drop Sky in an instant.
* Talking about new screensavers.
* Really…that’s about it. Nothing much new here at all.
* Mac OS time. Here we go…
* Hair Force One has returned.
* Recaps the updates to mac OS in recent years. Building up to the new name, which is…
* mac OS Mojave | |
* As predicted, dark mode. Quick preview, not much to say about it really is there? Showed off Xcode in dark mode.
* New feature: dynamic desktop (demo time)
* Desktop stacks help to reduce clutter on your desktop. Basically the digital equivalent of neatly stacking up all your shit and calling it “tidy”.
* Finder improvements - metadata, quick actions. Works with multiple files (e.g. create PDF from multiple).
* Customisable actions using Automator.
* Markup added to QuickLook.
* Improvements to Screenshots. Thumbnail appears when you screenshot in the corner (this seems to work like screenshots on iOS do, but on steroids). Can drag and drop into apps too.
* Screenshotting HUD presents different options, including video capture.
* Continuity - scan on your Mac - it pops up on your iPhone and you can use your camera to scan and it appears on your Mac immediately.
* News on the Mac. Zzzz… | |
* Stocks on the Mac. Moving on…
* Voice Memos on the Mac. iCloud syncing.
* Home and HomeKit on the Mac. FINALLY.
* Updated privacy protection throughout the system. Protected by default.
* Talking about Safari and privacy, tracking. Are Apple about to kill ads with tracking? Built-in support for blocking tracking on a per-site basis.
* Fingerprinting - allows websites to track your device. Apple trying to make this harder by reducing the amount of information exposed to websites.
* Mac App store redesigned from the ground up. Basically taking the improvements from iOS to the Mac.
* Brand new UI. New tabbed interface, new product pages. Announced a bunch of apps, including Panic Transmit. FTP! FTP! FTP!
* Craig now talking about Metal and showing lots of impressive charts and benchmarks.
* An impressive real-time 3D rendering demo using Unity.
* New developer tool: CreateML, machine learning for non-experts. Built with Swift.
* Core ML 2 | |
* No, Apple is not merging macOS and iOS. Duh.
* Craig is building to something. Sneak peek time….
* Bringing parts of UIKit to the Mac.
* Phase 1 - eat your own dogfood. Many of the new apps announced today are built using this.
* It’s not going to be ready for production until 2019. Bad luck! But you’ve still got STOCKS!
* Now covering loads of features quickly. Group FaceTime is in there.
* Tim is back and recapping. I think we’re almost done unless there’s a last minute hardware announcement. I doubt it.
* Developer betas for everything coming later after the keynote.
* Video time | |
* And we’re done! |
