Special attention should be paid to the licensing implications of databases. Restrictive licensing like in the case of Google Map Maker can effectively trap data, hampering its use even for the original data provider. When such tools cannot be avoided, an effective workaround is to publish data beforehand under a more liberal license and only then enter it in the more restrictively licensed database. Note that in this concrete example, it would not be enough to publish data first on Google Map's open contender OpenStreetMap as the OpenStreetMap license and Google's map data license are not compatible. If geo data is to be submitted to Google Maps while preserving its openness it will have to be published first on a third platform for instance with a license waiver such as CC0
