Great work @maddisondesigns!! Just a simple fix in your code to get the correct itemmeta attached to its order item: the value for the ID is the order_item_id, not the order_id, so changing on line 202 the value $new_id for $new_item_id should fix it.
I've made the fix in my own fork to let people now.
