Everything that you see on the site is editable through edit.mountainworkshops.org. Some parts of the interface will benefit from some explanation. For example:
This is probably the most complicated thing you might have to do, so it's the first and maybe only thing that we'll explain. It is unusual for someone to publish a fresh photojournalism story through the UI, since those are usually generated automatically on the last day of workshops. However there are cases, for example when a story was not ready to publish by midnight on that last day, when someone may need to publish the full story through the UI. So here are the steps:
Fill out all of the fields, noting a couple of things:
-
Note that instead of a entering a subtitle under the title, you will enter the subtitle text in the
excerpt
field at the bottom of this page. -
Give the story a byline by selecting a
User
from the drop-down in the middle of the page. If you don't see the story creator in this dropdown, don't worry. Just create a new Wordpress user by clickingUser
on the left side of the admin panel. When you refresh the story creation page, you should be able to pick your newly created user from that dropdown.
-
Give it a title that will make it recognizable. We usually follow the pattern "{story_title} - Gallery" -- e.g. if the story is "Hay Hay Horses", we recommend calling the gallery "Hay Hay Horses - Gallery".
-
Select the story you just created from the
story
dropdown.
-
The convention for titling an
image
is just to use the url for the high-res version of that image, e.g. https://s3.amazonaws.com/2018mwsimages/for-web/large/chris_kohley_01_wkupj_mt_sterling_ky_mountain_workshops_2018.large.jpg. -
Enter the full S3 URL for each of the sizes. We are currently not making a medium-res resize, so just use the high-res version for field. The file paths on S3 will usually look like this:
-
It's best if you can find and enter the IPTC id for each image, but if you can't access it or don't have time, it the image can publish without it. The drawback there is that the system will have no way of preventing redundancy if the same image is uploaded later through the automation system.
-
A
gallery image
is a link between an image and a gallery. Using this technique allows the same image to be associated with multiple galleries -- for example, (1) its original parent gallery and (2) a best-of collection. -
A good naming convention for the title of a
gallery image
is to take the gallery it's linking to and add the sequence number of the added image. For example, story: "Hay Hay Horses", gallery: "Hay Hay Horses - Gallery", gallery image: "Hay Hay Horses - Gallery - 03", for the third image. -
The only fields for a
gallery image
areimage
, chosen from the dropdown, andgallery
, chosen from a second dropdown.
That's it for posting a new gallery story. Like we said, it's the most complicated task you'll have to do from the UI, and 98% of the time it's automated, but just in case. If there are other issues, just ping Justin Richards and he will address the issues and/or extend these instructions.
