Hong Kong Code Conf 2015

The Philosophy:

We believe that the Hong Kong developer community is skilled and diverse, but that often these skills end up hidden away in big organisations.

We aim to provide a forum for local developers to share these skills, and inspire their peers.

With a mixture of local and international speakers, we provide talks which are targeted and relevant.

We believe that conferences don't need to be big and expensive to be valuable.

The date:

Last year was Saturday September 6th. The time of year, and day of week were pretty good.

So I plan to do the same, subject to venue availability.

So I'm looking for a Saturday in September or early October.

Favouring earlier than later.

Attendee count:

In 2014 we had 120 paid tickets, 12 speakers, and 4 helpers.

I would like to have a total of 200 attendees for 2015.

Notable guests:

In 2014, I'd like to say we hosted all the best and most passionate coders in Hong Kong.

But because space was limited, we couldn't invite as many as I would have liked.

To describe our guests, it's probably most appropriate to list our speakers.

Our speaker list last year included:

  • Amber Matthews (HK) - freelance UX consultant
  • Richard Cohen (HK) - freelance android expert
  • Matthew Lenher (Canada) - freelance Ruby and JavaScript expert
  • Mu-An Chiou (Taiwan) - designer and developer at GitHub
  • Bart Verkoeijen (HK) - full-stack developer at Quantified
  • Jonas S Karlsson (Sweden) - former data storage architect at Google
  • Brendan Tang (China) - student at HKU
  • Sebastian Korfmann (Germany) - developer at Bulletproof Networks, Australia
  • Hubert Lee (HK) - freelance web developer
  • Andrew Medworth (HK) - developer at Goldman Sachs
  • Michelle Sun (HK) - founder of First Code Academy
  • Pedro Pimentel (HK) - former-CTO of first Code Academy

I expect 2015 to be a similar mix of local and international speakers.

Organisers and Sponsors:

Organisers

  • Matthew Rudy Jacobs
  • Eddie Lau
  • Jimmy Chu
  • Steve Holmes

We've been running developer events in Hong Kong since 2010.

We run Codeaholics every month hosting 2-3 speakers on various software topics.

Most months we have 50-70 attendees.

Supporting Organisations:

  • Codeaholics
  • Thought Sauce
  • 42labs

Codeaholics is our base. We have 474 Hong Kong coders on our mailing list, 937 likes on our Facebook page, and 266 followers on our Twitter.

We are a large and active community of passionate coders.

Thought Sauce and 42labs are local development companies that provide admin and financial assistance to our events.

Sponsors:

In 2014 we only had one sponsor, Chengbao. They provided afternoon Coffee and cakes in exchange for a speaking slot to help recruit.

We don't want to be reliant on sponsors, but will offer sponsorship opportunities to cover the following costs

  • Speakers dinner
  • Refreshments during the day
  • Lunch
  • Afternoon coffee
  • After party drinks

Companies who we'll approach will be local employers (eg. ChengBao, GoGoVan), and international service providers (eg. Microsoft, GitHub, Codeship)

Budget?

We operate with a transparent budget. So you can see the accounts for our 2014 event here: https://github.com/codeaholicshk/codeconf-website/wiki/Budget

In 2014 our total revenue was 27,100 HKD.

For 2015 with larger attendee numbers, the self-sufficient budget is 40,000HKD

If the venue and catering costs exceed that, the remainder will come from sponsors.

I anticipate we can raise an additional 20,000HKD from sponsors if necessary.
