Thanks for responding so quickly. Original, professional CD is flawless. Mounted it correctly in DOSBox - everything is working very well except the video and audio associated with mission execution - just static and nondescript pictures. Walcrite, etc. work normally. Any ideas?
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
Hi. My name is Joe and I'm from Rhode Island. I got my first PC just to play the floppy disc version of BARIS. I played the game to death, and bought my next PC with a CD-ROM so I could get the CD-ROM version of BARIS in 1994. I had the priviledge of exchanging e-mail with Fritz Bronner for awhile before we lost touch. I love this game! I played a few matches via PBM that actually worked, and attempted to set up a modem game with a friend in Wisconsin that simply did not work. I have mainly played the game vs the solo. I've done this by choosing a side and setting the game up as human vs human and then merely skipping the player I wasn't playing when the turn came up. I had over 100 landings and my earliest was a 1965 Voshkod/ 1 man LM landing. This game is a real gen, and since I'm pretty experienced in playing it, I'd love to offer my services in play testing any new games that would build on BARIS. I've had published credits as a board wargame play tester and was the Space History editor for Sport Rocketry, the official magazine of the National Association of Rocketry- the model rocket folks.....I'm semi retired, so I have the patience and time to be a good playtester..plus I think out the box as the exception, not the rule, so I'm good had finding the odd bal strategies that would wreck a game. For example I used the unmanned docking mission in BARIS to build up my capsule reliability and docking experience before a manned mission. There is a bug in BARIS that allows you to build 3 shuttles and never have to buld another shuttle vehicle again. I also would like to know one thing: How can you make BARIS run in Windows XP. Rumor has it that the game can't be run on a high end video card. This site is fantastic! I'll be visiting it often.Joe
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
Joe: I am currently running BARIS on Windows XP through DOSBox program. It works fine except for the few mission-related video glitches I have previously described. A REALLY good website to download DOSBox to run your CD is Abandomain.com. Use their install and config. instructions (they are very clear and concise) and you will be set.
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
Thanks for the info! Now I have a further problem. I downloaded and installed DOSBOX and D-Fend, but when I attempted to install BARIS to my Windows XP Home OS, I couldn't. I opened the CD from MyComputer and double-clicked on both installs. A dos box opened up and flashed closed very quickly. I attempted to install via "Run" by typing D: Install (enter) and the same thing happened. I'm running a 1.4 GH AMD processor with a gig of RAM and a 256 MB video card. Any ideas?
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
Hey, I just wanted to confirm - the "video skipping bug" hasn't been fixed, and there's no known solution?
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
You believe this after all that, the video files do not work and the game locks up! Any suggestions?
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
Looks like a DOSBox issue, as everybody's had issues with the video. I find that they are replaced by loud static though.
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
Yes, I should have specified that, but was already late for work... It's on XP, and it is an NTFS drive (the core game is installed on NTFS, that is- I use an original CD-ROM and haven't tried copying the contents to disk). I haven't run into NTFS-related problems with other games on dosbox. Is there a general BARIS problem with it, or just the video?
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"}
How many people really have issues with the video? Can they be fixed? Should I stop looking at this for the patch? I've never gotten them to work, so I just assumed...
Re: Buzz Aldrin's race into space"} |
