reflections on three gear ups from mod 3
Migroagressions
* What are you left thinking about from today's session?
* I found it very interesting to talk within a group of diverse people and hear about what microagressions they thing they have and how they think that their past has led them to possess such microagressions. I actually had never heard of this term before, and didn’t realize that it’s something that a lot of times, we don’t realize we have. The role playing was tough to do, mainly because sometimes it was even hard for me to see the microagression in them, and I realized that’s because I wasn’t the target of the aggression. So it was interesting to have to take a step back and see what something may be offensive. I really appreciated this practice.
* How do you think the concepts covered in Gear Up today will impact you as a software developer? 3-5 sentences
* Becoming more aware of identifying these microagressions is something that will be very helpful in the working environment. I think this, mainly, because I’m one that always wants to promote and maintain harmony. Being able to identify microagressions both from me and from others, helps me step in when needed.
* Any additional thoughts on the session today?
* I really appreciated this session, and it gave me a lot to think about. Like I said earlier, I had never heard of this term before, and it is definitely something that exists. Thanks, Sal!
Tragedy of the commons
* What are you left thinking about from today's session?
* I’ve been thinking about how racism and classism plays a part in diversity and how much housing plays a role in segregating people.
* How do you think the concepts covered in Gear Up today will impact you as a software developer? 3-5 sentences
* I think that the concepts today will help me when deciding where I want to work I want to ensure that I am in a diverse environment and if I’m not, I want to make sure that wherever I am, asking what their ideas are for ensuring or making a diverse background.
* Any additional thoughts on the session today?
* Thank you Brian!
Civil Tech Gear Up (Mod 4 Teach)
* What are you left thinking about from today's session?
* I’m wondering what type of civic tech companies are out there in Denver. It would be cool to have a list of some of those companies. I also think it was really cool that although some people chose the same scenario to brainstorm a problem for, all of the angles at which they thought to attack the problem was different. This made me realize how important it is to have collaboration between the need and the aid… what exactly would help in the long run?
* How do you think the concepts covered in Gear Up today will impact you as a software developer? 3-5 sentences
* I know that I want to be in an occupation that gives back to the community. Civic tech is all about finding a problem and using tech to solve it. I know for a fact that this is something that I am going to be involved with for the rest of my life while I’m in tech.
* Any additional thoughts on the session today?
* I really enjoyed doing the partner activity, and then wire framing out our apps. I liked that room for creativity, and the time we were able to share with each other what we had brainstormed.
