Reading Passage 1

Accelerated Change in the Arctic Climate System

For much of human history, the Earth’s climate system remained within a relatively narrow range of variability. Energy received from the Sun was, on average, balanced by heat radiated back into space, allowing global temperatures to fluctuate only gradually over long periods. While natural forces such as shifts in the Earth’s orbit, volcanic activity, and changes in solar intensity occasionally disrupted this balance, their effects unfolded over centuries or millennia. In recent times, however, the rapid increase in greenhouse gases resulting from industrialisation, energy production, and land-use change has altered this equilibrium, producing a measurable rise in global temperatures.

Although the overall increase in average global temperature may appear modest, the Arctic has experienced far more pronounced warming. Observations show that temperature increases in high northern latitudes have exceeded the global mean by a considerable margin. This uneven distr
