I ran into a minor problem, my adapter was using a custom ViewHolder, so I changed the signature and fixed methods to:

public abstract class HeaderFooterRecyclerViewAdapter<VH extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder> extends RecyclerView.Adapter<VH>

It doesn't work with drag&drop.

I've created a version where the header, footer and content ViewHolders are all generic parameters: https://gist.github.com/kustra/57bd11179a57a659124c

This quite hard work on that Header and Footer 👍
However, I was able to work on my FlexibleAdapter project that adds headers/sections, unfortunately footers are not covered, but headers work with drag&drop.
