Hi, I'm Michael. I'm the guy who initiated Substance.io about 3 years ago.
-
it's an open source project
-
the original idea was creating a semantic editor. on the one hand it allows writers to focus only on the content, and on the other hand its easier to process that data automatically.
-
i realized that there are many fields that could benefit from this approach
-
really challenging for publishers to implement efficient publishing workflow
- much manual work required (submission -> review -> final publication)
- closed formats, that are incompatible to each other
- error-prone, time consuming and costly
- publishers are seeking for complete solutions, that are easy to integrate
- on the other side, there's also much space for improvement for authoring tools
- state of technology, should be easier to write together, discuss and share content and eventually connect to a publisher, ship it
And that's where Substance comes in.
- suite of reusable components (use individually)
- each comp is responsible for a different part of the digital publishing workflow
- designed from ground up to run in the browser. easy to integrate
- considers content as data, by strictly separating content from presentation
- Instead of relying on closed proprietary document formats, a simplified shared document model, used by all parties involved
- it very easy to customize too (which means you can add custom elements to it, e.g. interactive content)
- it comes with versioning
- support for annotations and user comments
- ready to be integrated into collaborative workflows
I've been working with scientific publishers lately
- elife lens, a new display method for scientific content
- built on top of a customized substance document model
- demonstrates, that when using this format
- you gain the ability to create highly interactive interfaces which add real value to the reading experience
- I've been working on Substance mostly in my freetime
- Now applying for the fellowship to turn this into a full time effort, at least for one year
- In this time I'd like to utilize the system in real world environments of OA publishers.
- i'm also preparing to support other use-cases, education, open government, journalism
