What started out a simple launch of our 2010 Print Commission prints at Handmark Gallery expanded in to a rather full on five day event of print activity and meeting with the rich array of print artists in Hobart.
Print events that took place during the week 9-12 Sept included the opening of The Watercourse Way at the welcoming and dynamic Church Studio in Franklin. Pat & Charles Zuber are to be congratulated for their venture in setting up both an exhibition space and an artist in residency facility. Artists in the Watercourse exhibition from the D'Entrecasteaux Channel area included Annick Ansselin, Rowena Bond, John Farrow Cath de Little, Ros Meeker, Deborah Wace, Michael Schlitz, as well as the Zuber's.
The strong crowd of 80 or so were delighted by the opening address of Councillor Rosalie Woodruff who delivered one of the best researched and well presented addresses I have ever heard.
Friday was a huge print day in Hobart with a succession of events taking place during the day. Melissa Smith closed her magnificent exhibition of prints at 146, Arts Tasmania's exhibition space in Elizabeth Street. Some 60 people were in attendance to hear Melissa speak about her works and be acknowledged by Arts Tasmania Deputy Director, Steve Kyne.
The Tasmanian Art Gallery &amp; Museum's <em>Essence - Australian Prints &amp; Drawings</em> Senior Curator of Art, Sue Backhouse, presented a comprehensive and beautifully informed floor talk of all the works in this sumptuous exhibition drawn from TMAG's Collection.
The Henry Jones Art Hotel located on Hobart harbour offers a unique program of promoting contemporary Tasmanian art by installing works in their hotel suites and main public areas. Hotel Curator, Christine Scott, organised the displays, which consciously aim to promote the sale of Tasmanian art.
Handmark Gallery - a beautiful exhibition space, wonderfully located on Salamanca Place and directed by the dynamic Alannah Dopson, offers a fantastic selection of artworks (a lot of prints) by some of the best Tasmanian printmakers. 150 people attended the opening of the exhibition, which was formally opened by Deputy Premier Lara Giddings. Thanks to Handmark for their generous offer of the fabulous red wall to showcase our 2010 Print Commission prints.
