Examples of how to test the impact of the v1.16 API deprecations

Kubernetes v1.16 API deprecation testing

Examples of how to test the impact of the v1.16 API deprecations and ways to debug early!

If this is the first time you're hearing of these deprecations STOP and read this blog post (thanks @vllry!).

Common misunderstandings

  1. The exact apiVersion: value that I use in my manifest is stored on disk (etcd).

Running Sway (Wayland) on Void Linux (without SystemD)

Running Sway on Void Linux (without SystemD)

elogind is the part of SystemD logind that can run as standalone. So we need it to run Sway without SystemD. To do that we need to build wlroots with elogind option. Then we can install and use Sway as normal from the current repo. There are other ways to achieve this without elogind here. But I tried with the elogind option and I was successful.

UPDATE: I tried again on a fresh install. The elogind option is set by default on the repo version. So you can skip the xbps-src command below and continue. wlroots should install as a dependency of sway if you follow the later commands.

Multiple MySQL versions on MacOS with Homebrew

Update - 4 september 2020

Making multiple MySQL versions work with Homebrew was tricky to say the least. Fortunately there are 2 new easy ways that I learned of to achieve this.

DBngin app

As @4unkur and @henrytirla commented below, there is this extremely easy to use app called DBngin, which lets you setup multiple databases (not only MySQL) simultaneously using different ports:

Rancher 2.0, RKE, and some Raspberry Pi 3s

Kubernetes and Arm

Getting rke and Rancher setup to run kubernetes on arm is interesting. There is no official support yet via rancher, although there is interest and some work done towards those efforts. This is my attempt at getting a cluster of 3 Pis (2 3Bs and 1 3B+) provisioned and registered to a rancher 2 server.

Prep

I've successfully completed this both with Hypriot OS 1.9.0 and the arm64 builds https://github.com/DieterReuter/image-builder-rpi64 Both times I used the same basic cloud-init setup

Rancher-Azure-Cloud-Provider-Storage-Classes

storageClass with PersistentVolumeClaims are really the way to do storage with Kubernetes.

For Azure There are 3 types of storage avalible.

  • (Slow, Limited, Going to cause tears) AzureFiles - CIFS share, with all the limitaions of CIFS :(
  • (Better) Azure Disk (Storage Account) - You can use this type with Azure "Node Driver" VMs in Rancher.
  • (Best) Azure Disk (Managed) - You will need to create your own VMs that support managed disk with premium storage, then use the "Custom" option.
