Behringer TD-3 Tutorial

System overview

  • 4 Pattern Groups (PG): I, II, III, iV
  • 16 Patterns (PA) per PG, eight "A" patterns and eight "B" patterns.
  • Each PA can have up to 16 steps. Default step is a 16th note.
  • 7 Tracks (TR)
    • PG I consists TR 1, 2
    • PG II consists TR 3, 4
    • PG III consists TR 5, 6
    • PG IV consists TR 7

How to set a pattern

Set "MODE" knob to "PATTERN WRITE" (PWM) position.

Choose "PATTERN GROUP" (PG) (I - IV).

Clear Pattern n:

  • Press "FUNCTION" to enter NORMAL MODE.
  • Press "PATTERN n" to set pattern n - LED will blink.
  • Hold "CLEAR" and press "PATTERN n".

Enter number of steps, if not 16:

  • Hold "FUNCTION" and press "STEP" 16 times, for 16 steps - 16 is default.

Enter step types:

  • Press "TIME MODE" to enter TIME MODE.
  • Press button corresponding to note length (⬤/⭘/—) for each note.
  • TIME MODE will exit once all durations are entered.

Enter pitches:

  • Press "PITCH MODE".
  • Enter all notes of pattern, except for tie (⭘) or rest (—).
  • Note that there are two "C" keys, "C lo" and "C hi"
  • Press "FUNCTION" to exit "PITCH MODE".

Enter octaves, accents and slides:

  • Press "PITCH MODE".
  • Octaves:
  • For each note (with "D"), hold "WRITE/NEXT" (this will play the notepad) and press "TRANSPOSE DOWN".
  • For "U", press "TRANSPOSE UP"
  • For no octave change, release "WRITE/NEXT" and go to next note.

Listen to pattern:

  • Press "FUNCTION".
  • Press "START/STOP".
  • Press "START/STOP again to stop play.

To listen to multiple patterns, press and hold the pattern buttons to listen to, e.g. 1 and 4, then press "START/STOP".

Do similar for other patterns.

Switch to Pattern Play Mode (PPM) to avoid overwriting patterns.

Creating a Track

  • Set "MODE" knob to "TRACK WRITE" (TWM) position.
  • Set "TRACK/PATTERN GROUP" knob to n (1-7).
    • PATTERN GROUP I patterns are only available for use in track 1 or 2.
    • PATTERN GROUP II patterns - tracks 3 or 4
    • PATTERN GROUP III patterns - tracks 5 or 6
    • PATTERN GROUP IV patterns - track 7.
  • Press "CLEAR" to reset track to beginning.
  • Press "START/STOP". Current pattern of selected track will be played.
  • Select pattern to add to track.
    • For example, to use pattern 2A, press "PATTERN 2" (note D), then press A (labeled 100).

Setting MIDI sync and clock type

  • Press "FUNCTION".
  • Press "BACK" and "WRITE/NEXT" at the same time to enter Sync setting mode.
  • Selector 1 to 8 LEDs will turn on, and the current clock source (1 to 4) and clock rate (5 to 8) will flash.
  • Press "SELECTOR 1", 2, 3, or 4 to change the clock source to INT, MIDI, USB, or TRIG respectively
  • Press "SELECTOR 5", 6, 7, or 8 to change the clock rate to 1PPs, 2PPQ, 24PPQ, or 48PPQ respectively.

After no changes for about 3 seconds, the changes are saved.

Caution: Clock source must always be INT (internal) if you are not using an external clock. Note: Clock rate 24 or 48 PPQ (Pulses per quarter) are recommended.

Patterns

One pattern consisting of half a bar (8 steps). Make sure to enter number of steps using "FUNCTION" and "STEP" eight times.
