Home-Made Rust Remover Recipe

This recipe creates an effective rust remover that rivals commercial products like Evapo-Rust. You can make it as a liquid for soaking parts or convert it to a gel for application on vertical surfaces.

Liquid Rust Remover

Perfect for soaking rusted parts that can fit in a container.

Ingredients

Per 1L of Rust Remover liquid:

  • 200g Citric Acid
  • 125g Baking Soda
  • 900ml Distilled Water
  • 10 drops of Dish Soap

Instructions

  1. Fill up the container with 900ml of Distilled Water
  2. Add 200g of Citric Acid
  3. Stir until the acid has completely dissolved and the liquid is clear
  4. Slowly add the 125g of Baking Soda (warning: it will react strongly)
  5. Wait for the reaction to stop and stir until the liquid is clear
  6. Add 10 drops of Dish Soap
  7. You're done!

Gel Rust Remover

You can convert the liquid into a gel. The gel will make it much easier to apply to rusted parts that aren't easily submerged.

Ingredients

You will need the following items:

  • 75ml Distilled Water
  • 75g Corn Starch

Or, alternatively:

  • Xanthan Gum
  • Glycerine

Instructions

To make the gel:

  1. Add your Rust Remover liquid to a metal pot and turn up the heat to a simmer

Then, if you're using Corn Starch:

  1. Add 75ml of Distilled Water to a cup
  2. Slowly add 75g of Corn Starch and stir until fully dissolved and you have a thick gel

Or, if you're using Xanthan Gum:

  1. Add a bit of Xanthan Gum to a cup
  2. Slowly add Glycerine while stirring until you have a gel

And finally:

  1. While the liquid is simmering, slowly add the gel while stirring
