What is your understanding of gender, gender identity, and biological sex? Is there anything more you need to learn?

Biological sex can differ from gender identity. Someone born as a certain biological sex may identify as a different corresponding gender. Biological sex and gender can also be on a spectrum.

What was your familiarity with the history of women and software development? What surprised you about that history?

While tech may be seen as a male-dominated field these days, in the early days of software development the field had a huge number of females.

How do you see gender bias playing out in tech?

We run a risk of products being rolled out that are developed from only a male standpoint, leaving other genders in the dark while using certain products. It can be dangerous because one gender may develop an app without considering the needs of the other genders, simply because they are not aware of those needs.

What do you think about Q?

I think Q is a very forward-thinking idea, it won't make any genders feel uncomfortable about hearing the voice.

Why would creating genderless software matter?

It would increase the user base of that software and be an overall more inclusive prodiuct.

What are you taking away from this session? How will you use this in your Turing (and future) experience?

I've realized how important it is to have a diverse team to develop products, so that the product can be designed to be inclusive of all types of people and therefore allows for a greater user base to use the app.
