This is a working draft for the equitment used for https://www.youtube.com/anzcoders where I record and upload most of the Sydney tech meetups. I've also made some notes about some of the gear listed here. A more formal document will be published at some point.
-
Camera: HC-VX980M
-
Mic: Rode FilmMaker Kit
-
HDMI Recorder: ezcap 280
-
Tripod: I like the
Manfrotto MKCOMPACTLT-BK Compact Light Tripod
cause you can fit it into a backpack.
Make sure you have an extra HDMI cables when using the HDMI recorder for the screen.
The issues I have with the ezcap 280
is that it is a little tricky to get sound on the recording.
This mean I have to manually sync the screen record and the speaker record by sight. If you can record audio on
both the screen and speaker you can have most editing programs sync the two recordings.
HDMI Splitter: Most of the Decimator products are grear for spitting the HDMI and getting a SDI out. I've found the DMON QUAD work consistently for virtually any AV setup.
Video Out: Black Magic Web Presenter
Wireless Hand Mic: Rode Performer
Multi-Channel Recorder: H6 Zoom
Co-Axial Cables: I've found that BNC SDI 3G works well https://www.ordiocables.com.au/product/hd-sdi-3g-belden-bnc-video-cable/
I've found some success with the HD60-S from Elgato. But some AV systems seem to hate the splitter and you get flashing or lots green on the projector.
I find for my self that talks where the speaker can be seen are overall more engaging. There is another reason if you can't record the screen of a speaker you can take a white shot and record the slides and speaker in a single frame. A wide shot does mean that reading the slides or code for a demos becomes harder to see. But, it's a recorded talk at least.
I've found that the panasonic camera work quite well. I typically try and use something like a HV-770 or better, mostly cause zoom and video bitrate are good enough you can setup the camera toward the back of a room without getting to much lose of quality.
If ~$700 is to much for a camera something like HC-V160 will work, but you may need to setup the camera close to the front of a room.
If you can justify the cost cameras like the HV-770 come with a shoe holder so you can safly attach a mounted microphone or wireless audio receiver.
Most DSLR will only record for 15-30min this can be a pain for longer talks. You can get around the record length problem if your camera has this limitation with a HDMI recorder.
The cam-link is this magical and awesome little bit of hardware that allows you to stream HDMI to USB-B. If you don't mind having a laptop sitting next to a camera recording the video for more than 30min on a DSRL is easy, or you can plugin a video camera and stream with OBS Studio.
If you want some pro hardware Atomos had the ninja blade is a HDMI and audio recorder that records high-quality video, it can also take a mic and record the audio as well; The audio in is need for cameras that don't send the sound out via the HDMI
