Strengths & Storytelling Reflection Guidelines
##### Strengths & Storytelling Reflection
Build on your professional story by thinking about how you're progressing at Turing. Answer the questions below in your own gist to use your StrengthsFinder themes to add to your story:
Write 1-2 paragraphs about your StrengthsFinder themes: How have you seen yourself using these strengths at Turing? Has your understanding of these strengths changed since you first reflected on them? If so, how?
I've seen myself using my abilities as a strategic thinker, and being a positive teammate who is adaptable in any situation. Through working with others, I've had to base my working style in each of these strengths, thus heightening my understanding of these skills within me. In my first paired project, I had to learn to work with someone who was not always positive and and not approaching problems straegically. I had to adapt my work flow to accomodate their working style, and use my positivity to bring them back to a positive state when they were upset that they were struggling with difficult concepts. Through this I became more skilled at talking through code line-by-line, which has helped my comprehension of the material being taught in class.
Write a story about your Turing experience so far: When have you struggled? How have you dealt with struggle? When have you succeeded at Turing? How did you accomplish those successes?
I came to Turing and wasn't sure I was going to be able to cut it. Many of my classmates seemed to have a leg up on those who came to Turing with little or no experience. I fell behind by my second week of school, but forced myself to double down on my studying to got caught up with my classmates. During my first paired project a few days later, I began to understand how all of my module was struggling, and found myself teaching many of the students of my module the problem solving skills for working through difficult tasks. I've learned that through teaching and helping my classmates, I've continued to sharpen my understanding of these concepts in addition to fufilling my need to help others during their struggles. This has led to a sense of fufillment in watching others work through problems as well as increased my understanding and ability to describe what is happening in code verbally.
Answer the question: how does your Turing story end? Create a vision for your future and your career transition into being a junior developer.
My story at Turing ends with finding a lifestyle that I find satisfying. I like to travel and I love working with technology - while my previous career had both of these aspects, I was no longer learning anything and my income was stagnating. I am excited to begin a new career in technology where I never have to stop learning and am facinated by what I am able to do with technology. I hope to continue my education as a junior developer into learning new languages and applications of software throughout my career in computer science.
After you practice storytelling in the session, answer this question: What was particularly easy or difficult about telling your story? What are 1-2 steps that you can take to continue to improve your abilities to tell your story, talk about yourself with ease, and examine your strengths?
I found it difficult to speak about myself and my skills as a developer. While I know that I embody many of these skills, it is difficult to relate them to specific real-world examples. I think as I continue to build my skillset, I will notice my strengths more often as well as gain the confidence to speak about my skills from a personal perspective. Steps I will take to continue to grow will be to think more consciously about my strengths, and to make a mental note when I recognize myself embodying these strengths. Addtionally, I will continue to practice my storytelling and how it relates to my specific strengths.
