Back To Basics: Making Your Own Connections
# Back To Basics: Making Your Own Connections
## What will happen in your session?
Participants will learn how to build a do-it-yourself Internet connection using mesh technologies.
Nico Pace will lead a hands-on session using open source hardware WiFi router to create a network onstage, work with participants to build a peer-to-peer platform, stream videos and even show how peer-to-peer instant messaging can happen.
It will be all about tinkering, exploring possibilities, and showing how anyone, anywhere, can connect their community.
## What is the goal or outcome of your session?
To show that alternative solutions to access are possible and that anyone is capable of building connectivity.
## Script
1. Setting the stage:
Being in an urban area or in remote rural areas,
no matter if we are in a wealthy country or not
the current society is by no means inclusive at all.
Connectivity is no exception.
Communities around the world are tired of waiting for solutions for the unfairness that the current system has created on them.
They are taking the matters on their own hands.
We will follow the paths of these pioneers, with the expectation that this can serve as a spark that will drive you to do it in your own projects and communities.
2. Understanding the context and motivation
Questions:
- what social interactions ocurr in our community now?
- what elements do we value from our community? any cultural elements that make us remember our villages when we are abroad/outside it?
- what things would we want to happen that are not happening already?
- what things are happening that we are ignoring?
- what things that we are already aware that are out there we don't like and wnat in our community?
- ultimately, what inspired us to create a network?

analyze one video each, and extract from the testimonies potential answers to these questions.
3. Understanding our territory
Take home the booklet in docs.altermundi.net and use it as a reference for your territory.
4. Let's build the network
4.1. Basic networking elements
- energy
- computer
- cable
- switch
- access point
What can we build with it?
4.2. Mesh elements
- wireless nodes
What can we build with it?
5. What to do with it
Use the statements we got from the earlier part of the day to check how we can use this infrastructure for this.
