Custom image sizes are now saved in the attachment's metadata as well. This means that you can also retrieve the cropped version using
wp_get_attachment_image_src( $attach_id, "vtr_{$width}_{$height}" );
- of course that's still not a 100% reliable, since the size could have been removed if the metadata was regenerated from scratch.
