2015-01-29 Unofficial Relay FAQ

Compilation of questions and answers about Relay from React.js Conf.

Disclaimer: I work on Relay at Facebook. Relay is a complex system on which we're iterating aggressively. I'll do my best here to provide accurate, useful answers, but the details are subject to change. I may also be wrong. Feedback and additional questions are welcome.

What is Relay?

Relay is a new framework from Facebook that provides data-fetching functionality for React applications. It was announced at React.js Conf (January 2015).

Survey of screenshot-based CSS testing tools

Currently considering https://github.com/webdriverio/webdrivercss

Core Goals:

  • Can test in up-to-date versions of all major browsers
  • Can test on up-to-date versions of all major OSes
  • Can test in IE9 (because Bootstrap v4 will support IE9+)
  • Don't want to have to setup/maintain our own cluster of VMs running all the necessary OSes (and all the versions of Windows)
  • Workflow for management of reference/baseline/norm screenshots

Better local require() paths for Node.js

Better local require() paths for Node.js

Problem

When the directory structure of your Node.js application (not library!) has some depth, you end up with a lot of annoying relative paths in your require calls like:

const Article = require('../../../../app/models/article');

Those suck for maintenance and they're ugly.

Possible solutions

Quickly identify a common ancestor among 2+ categories.
// Suppose you have a bunch of category IDs:uint16_t and you need to identify their common ancestor (0 == root category ID)
// Also, suppose `byIndex[]` provides access to a structure that holds the parentId for each category.
// This here implementation will quickly identify the most common ancestor among them.
uint16_t CommonAncestor(const uint16_t *const cids, const uint8_t cnt)
{
if (cnt < 2)
{
// Too few to have any common ancestors
return 0;
}

Bundler CDN benchmarking with Fastly and Cloudflare (without HTTPS). The version on Cloudflare won't match the rubygems.org exactly as I can only take a snapshot, but the file size will be similar.

How to make faster scroll effects?

How to make faster scroll effects?

  • Avoid too many reflows (the browser to recalculate everything)
  • Use advanced CSS3 for graphic card rendering
  • Precalculate sizes and positions

Beware of reflows

The reflow appens as many times as there are frames per seconds. It recalculate all positions that change in order to diplay them. Basically, when you scroll you execute a function where you move things between two reflows. But there are functions that triggers reflows such as jQuery offset, scroll... So there are two things to take care about when you dynamically change objects in javascript to avoid too many reflows:
