Setting up M1 Macs for x86 development with Homebrew

Key Points

  • In general, binaries built just for x86 architecture will automatically be run in x86 mode
  • You can force apps in Rosetta 2 / x86 mode by right-clicking app, click Get Info, check "Open using Rosetta"
  • You can force command-line apps by prefixing with arch -x86_64, for example arch -x86_64 go
  • Running a shell in this mode means you don't have to prefix commands: arch -x86_64 zsh then go or whatever
  • Don't just immediately install Homebrew as usual. It should most likely be installed in x86 mode.

Homebrew

Not all toolchains and libraries properly support M1 arm64 chips just yet. Although

Details of investigation:

On a base system, /usr/bin/java is a symlink that points to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Commands/java, which is an Apple wrapper tool that locates and executes the actual java.

(Do not touch anything in those 2 system directories. It should actually be impossible due to "System Integrity Protection" anyway.)

If you don't have Java installed, attempting to execute java will open a dialog that invites you to install it.

Choosing a deployment tool - ansible vs puppet vs chef vs salt

Requirements

  • no upfront installation/agents on remote/slave machines - ssh should be enough
  • application components should use third-party software, e.g. HDFS, Spark's cluster, deployed separately
  • configuration templating
  • environment requires/asserts, i.e. we need a JVM in a given version before doing deployment
  • deployment process run from Jenkins

Enable key-repeat for ALL applications or just for IdeaVim/specific JetBrains apps

Upgrading to Lion or Yosemite and WebStorm 9, I noticed key repeat was
turned off for the IdeaVim plugin h j k l keys.

System-wide key repeat

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false in a terminal will enable
key repeat for every app. This can alternatively be found in the accessibility settings in OS X' preferences.

App specific key repeat
