Book production files for Out of the Software Crisis

Book production files

For Out of the Software Crisis.

These are under the MIT License. Do what you want, essentially. Probably doesn't work out of the box. Uses Pandoc (version 2.19.2), zx, weasyprint, and Literata.

You'll need to download them for this to work. And you'll need to edit the build script to point at the correct CSS files. And you'l need to edit the CSS to point at the correct font files.

Jekyll - how to build a REST API

Jekyll - how to build a REST API

Serve your data as static JSON

How to make a read-only JSON REST API using Jekyll.

This doesn't need any Ruby plugins - you just use some built-in templating features in Jekyll 3 or 4.

You will end up with a single JSON file contains data for all pages on the site, and another JSON file of just posts. Alternatively, you can replace every HTML page and post with a JSON version.

Rendering pages server-side with Express (and Pug)

Terminology

  • View: Also called a "template", a file that contains markup (like HTML) and optionally additional instructions on how to generate snippets of HTML, such as text interpolation, loops, conditionals, includes, and so on.
  • View engine: Also called a "template library" or "templater", ie. a library that implements view functionality, and potentially also a custom language for specifying it (like Pug does).
  • HTML templater: A template library that's designed specifically for generating HTML. It understands document structure and thus can provide useful advanced tools like mixins, as well as more secure output escaping (since it can determine the right escaping approach from the context in which a value is used), but it also means that the templater is not useful for anything other than HTML.
  • String-based templater: A template library that implements templating logic, but that has no understanding of the content it is generating - it simply concatenates together strings, potenti

Screencast with VoiceOver

Screencast with VoiceOver

Here’s a quick how-to on recording your Mac desktop while using the VoiceOver screen reader. With this setup you’ll be able to capture both video and internal audio at the same time, and hear the audio output while recording.

Setup

For this setup we’ll be on OS X El Capitan and use QuickTime to capture the video and audio. The only extra thing required is the iShowU Audio Capture driver.

This Liquid loop for Jekyll sorts a collection by date in reverse order
{% comment %}
*
* This loop loops through a collection called `collection_name`
* and sorts it by the front matter variable `date` and than filters
* the collection with `reverse` in reverse order
*
* To make it work you first have to assign the data to a new string
* called `sorted`.
