PSR B1919+21 is a pulsar with a period of 1.3373 seconds, and a pulse width of 0.04 second. It was the first radio pulsar discovered (on November 28, 1967 by Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Antony Hewish). The power and regularity of the signals was thought to resemble a beacon, so for a time the source was nicknamed "LGM-1" (for "Little Green Men"). A…

Original NES Mario Theme for Sonic Pi

Making Chiptune Music using Sonic Pi v2.0

Warning: this might not work on a RaspberryPi yet

I was curious about making retro gaming sounds using Sonic Pi. A couple of months and a lot of Googling later, here's the original Mario Bros theme as it was heard on the NES console.

I'm (just about) old enough to remember rushing home from school to play this game at Philip Boucher's house, sitting cross-legged in front of the TV till my feet got pins and needles. Working out how to recreate it for Sonic Pi was a lot of fun!

JavaScript function hoisting by example

Below are many examples of function hoisting behavior in JavaScript. Ones marked as works successfuly print 'hi!' without errors.

To play around with these examples (recommended) clone them with git and execute them with e.g. node a.js

ABC Radio appears to be using a service from http://newrelic.com. You can get the ten most recently played tracks across their enabled stations here:
http://music.abcradio.net.au/api/v1/plays/search.json
Or you can add these parameters (as their web apps do to generate playlists):
from=yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ss.000Z // Date range start in UTC e.g. 2014-04-30T00:00:00.000Z
to=yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ss.000Z // Date range end in UTC e.g. 2014-04-30T00:00:00.000Z

Deploying from Git branches adds flexibility. Bring your feature branch up to date with master and deploy it to make sure everything works. If everything looks good the branch can be merged. Otherwise, you can deploy your master branch to return production to its stable state.

Updating a feature branch

First we'll update your local master branch. Go to your local project and check out the branch you want to merge into (your local master branch)

$ git checkout master

Fetch the remote, bringing the branches and their commits from the remote repository. You can use the -p, --prune option to delete any remote-tracking references that no longer exist in the remote. Commits to master will be stored in a local branch, remotes/origin/master.
