Winterizing the house

Closing

  • Cut power to well pump
  • Cut power to hot water heater with circuit breaker
  • Close main water valve
  • Open all faucets, and leave them open
    • kitchen sink, including blowing out spray hose
    • bathroom #1, including shower
    • bathroom #2, including shower
  • Drain water heater through garden hose
  • Drain well tank through garden hose
  • Drain the rest of the pipes through garden hose (same spigot as for well tank)
  • Washer/dryer hoses (3): unhook with switch on; then turn switch off
  • Drain water filter, then reattach
  • Drain black cap above water heater, then reattach
  • Flush toilets, then pump out tanks and bowls with bilge pump and a bucket
  • Add RV antifreeze to sinks, showers, toilet bowls, toilet tanks, and dishwasher (1/2 cup per trap, around 1/3 of a gallon for house): http://www.amazon.com/Prestone-AF222-RV-Waterline-Antifreeze/dp/B0038QHXPS/
  • Turn on heat in basement
  • Turn off the rest of the heat
  • Do something to septic pump?
  • Do something to septic tank?

Opening

  • Turn off all faucets and close tank drains except one hot water faucet
  • Make sure washing machine is off or hooked-up
  • Open main water valve
  • Turn valve to filter to allow water in?
  • Restore power to well pump
  • After water comes out of hot water faucet, turn on circuit breaker to hot water heater
