Abstract = {Auf den folgenden Seiten m{\"o}chte ich auf einen einfachen Zusammenhang hinweisen zwischen der von Kaluza vorgeschlagenen Theorie f{\"u}r den Zusammenhang zwischen Elektromagnetismus und Gravitation einerseits und der von de Broglie und Schr{\"o}dinger angegebenen Methode zur Behandlung der Quantenprobleme andererseits. Die Theorie von Kaluza geht darauf hinaus, die zehn Einsteinschen Gravitationspotentiale gik und die vier elektromagnetischen Potentiale ϕi in Zusammenhang zu bringen mit den Koeffizienten $\gamma$ik eines Linienelementes von einem Riemannschen Raum, der au{\ss}er den vier gew{\"o}hnlichen Dimensionen noch eine f{\"u}nfte Dimension enth{\"a}lt. Die Bewegungsgleichungen der elektrischen Teilchen nehmen hierbei auch in elektromagnetischen Feldern die Gestalt von Gleichungen geod{\"a}tischer Linien an. Wenn dieselben als Strahlengleichungen gedeutet werden, indem die Materie als eine Art Wellenausbreitung betrachtet wird, kommt man fast von selbst zu einer partiellen Differentialgleichung zweiter Ordnung, die als eine Verallgemeinerung der gew{\"o}hnlichen Wellengleichung angesehen werden kann. Werden nun solche L{\"o}sungen dieser Gleichung betrachtet, bei denen die f{\"u}nfte Dimension rein harmonisch auftritt mit einer bestimmten mit der Planckschen Konstante zusammenh{\"a}ngenden Periode, so kommt man eben zu den obenerw{\"a}hnten quantentheoretischen Methoden.}, |

Abstract = {Abstract We report the measurement of the emission time profile of scintillation from gamma-ray induced events in the XMASS-I 832 kg liquid xenon scintillation detector. Decay time constant was derived from a comparison of scintillation photon timing distributions between the observed data and simulated samples in order to take into account optical processes such as absorption and scattering in liquid xenon. Calibration data of radioactive sources, 55Fe, 241Am, and 57Co were used to obtain the decay time constant. Assuming two decay components, τ1 and τ2, the decay time constant τ2 increased from 27.9 ns to 37.0 ns as the gamma-ray energy increased from 5.9 keV to 122 keV. The accuracy of the measurement was better than 1.5 ns at all energy levels. A fast decay component with τ 1 ∼ 2 ns was necessary to reproduce data. Energy dependencies of τ2 and the fraction of the fast decay component were studied as a function of the kinetic energy of electrons induced by gamma-rays. The obtained data almost reproduced previously reported results and extended them to the lower energy region relevant to direct dark matter searches. }, |

Abstract = {Abstract Double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay process in which two orbital electrons are captured simultaneously in the same nucleus. Measurement of its two-neutrino mode would provide a new reference for the calculation of nuclear matrix elements whereas observation of its neutrinoless mode would demonstrate lepton number violation. A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as 4.7 × 10 21 years at 90% confidence level. The obtained limit has ruled out parts of some theoretical expectations. We obtain a lower limit on the 126Xe two-neutrino double electron capture half-life of 4.3 × 10 21 years at 90% confidence level as well. }, |

Abstract = {Abstract \{XMASS\} is a multipurpose liquid-xenon detector that currently aims to directly detect dark matter. In this paper, we describe the fabrication and characterization of reference sources used for the energy calibration and position reconstruction of the present \{XMASS\} detector. Several gamma-ray sources were produced in the form of a sealed needle-source. A thin-wall tube with a diameter of approximately 0.2 mm was sealed at both ends, with the 241Am or 57Co source material contained inside. The active region of the source was observed to be 1--2 mm long, close to the tip of the needle. These sources were tested in the \{XMASS\} detector, and the results were compared with Monte-Carlo simulations. }, |

Abstract = {Several unexpected astrophysical observations can be explained by gravitationally captured massive axions or axion-like particles, which are produced inside the Sun or other stars and are accumulated over cosmic times. Their radiative decay in solar outer space would give rise to a `self-irradiation' of the whole star, providing the time-independent component of the corona heating source (we do not address here the flaring Sun). In analogy with the Sun-irradiated Earth atmosphere, the temperature and density gradient in the corona--chromosphere transition region is suggestive for an omnipresent irradiation of the Sun, which is the strongest evidence for the generic axion-like scenario. The same mechanism is compatible with phenomena like the solar wind, the X-rays from the dark-side of the Moon, the X-ray background radiation, the diffuse X-ray excesses (below ∼1 keV), the non-cooling of oldest stars, etc. A temperature of ∼106 K is observed in various places, while the radiative decay of a population of such elusive particles mimics a hot gas, which fits unexpected astrophysical X-ray observations. Furthermore, the recently reconstructed quiet solar X-ray spectrum during solar minimum supports this work, since it covers the expected energy range, and it is consistent with the result of a simulation based on Kaluza--Klein axions above ∼1 keV. The derived axion luminosity (La≈0.16L⊙) fits the cosmic energy density spectrum and is compatible within 2σ with the recent \{SNO\} result, showing the important interplay between any exotic energy loss mechanism and neutrino production. At lower energies, using also a \{ROSAT\} observation, only ∼3% of the X-ray intensity is explained. Data from orbiting X-ray telescopes provide upper limits for particle decay rates 1 a.u. from the Sun, and suggest new types of searches on Earth or in space. In particular, X-ray observatories, with an unrivalled equivalent fiducial volume of ∼103 m3 for the 0.1--10 keV range, can search for the radiative decay of new particles even from existing data. This work introduces the elongation angle of the X-ray telescope relative to the Sun as a relevant new parameter. }, |

Abstract = {We have studied published data from the Yohkoh solar X-ray mission with the purpose of searching for signals from radiative decays of new, as yet undiscovered massive neutral particles. This search is based on the prediction that solar axions of the Kaluza-Klein type should result in the emission of X-rays from the Sun direction beyond the limb with a characteristic radial distribution. These X-rays should be observed more easily during periods of quiet Sun. An additional signature is the observed emission of hard X-rays by the Solar Maximum Mission ( SMM ), the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous ( NEAR ), and RHESSI . The recent observation made by RHESSI of a continuous emission from the nonflaring Sun of X-rays in the 3 to ~15 keV range fits the generic axion scenario. This work also suggests new analyses of existing data in order to exclude instrumental effects; it provides the rationale for targeted observations with present and upcoming (solar) X-ray telescopes, which can provide the final answer to the nature of the signals considered here. Such measurements become more promising during the forthcoming solar cycle minimum with an increased number of quiet-Sun periods.}, |

Abstract = {A search for solar axions has been performed using an axion helioscope which is equipped with a 2.3-m long 4 T superconducting magnet, a gas container to hold dispersion-matching gas, PIN-photodiode X-ray detectors, and a telescope mount mechanism to track the sun. A mass region around m a = 1 eV was newly explored. From the absence of any evidence, analysis sets a limit on axion--photon coupling constant to be g a γ γ < 5.6 -- 13.4 × 10 −10 GeV −1 for the axion mass of 0.84 < m a < 1.00 eV at 95% confidence level. Abstract = {Recently, a new framework for solving the hierarchy problem has been proposed which does not rely on low energy supersymmetry or technicolor. The gravitational and gauge interactions unite at the electroweak scale, and the observed weakness of gravity at long distances is due the existence of large new spatial dimensions. In this letter, we show that this framework can be embedded in string theory. These models have a perturbative description in the context of type I string theory. The gravitational sector consists of closed strings propagating in the higher-dimensional bulk, while ordinary matter consists of open strings living on D3-branes. This scenario raises the exciting possibility that the \{LHC\} and \{NLC\} will experimentally study ordinary aspects of string physics such as the production of narrow Regge-excitations of all standard model particles, as well more exotic phenomena involving strong gravity such as the production of black holes. The new dimensions can be probed by events with large missing energy carried off by gravitons escaping into the bulk. We finally discuss some important issues of model building, such as proton stability, gauge coupling unification and supersymmetry breaking. }, |

Abstract = {We propose a new framework for solving the hierarchy problem which does not rely on either supersymmetry or technicolor. In this framework, the gravitational and gauge interactions become united at the weak scale, which we take as the only fundamental short distance scale in nature. The observed weakness of gravity on distances ≳ 1 mm is due to the existence of n≥2 new compact spatial dimensions large compared to the weak scale. The Planck scale MPl∼GN−1/2 is not a fundamental scale; its enormity is simply a consequence of the large size of the new dimensions. While gravitons can freely propagate in the new dimensions, at sub-weak energies the Standard Model (SM) fields must be localized to a 4-dimensional manifold of weak scale ``thickness'' in the extra dimensions. This picture leads to a number of striking signals for accelerator and laboratory experiments. For the case of n=2 new dimensions, planned sub-millimeter measurements of gravity may observe the transition from 1/r2→1/r4 Newtonian gravitation. For any number of new dimensions, the \{LHC\} and \{NLC\} could observe strong quantum gravitational interactions. Furthermore, \{SM\} particles can be kicked off our 4 dimensional manifold into the new dimensions, carrying away energy, and leading to an abrupt decrease in events with high transverse momentum pT≳ TeV. For certain compact manifolds, such particles will keep circling in the extra dimensions, periodically returning, colliding with and depositing energy to our four dimensional vacuum with frequencies of ∼1012 Hz or larger. As a concrete illustration, we construct a model with \{SM\} fields localized on the 4-dimensional throat of a vortex in 6 dimensions, with a Pati-Salam gauge symmetry SU(4)×SU(2)×SU(2) in the bulk. |
