Linux vs. Mac for dev

Issues

  • Battery usage in general
    • Device drivers :(
  • All "productivity" software sucks
    • I am not a fan of Open/Libre office or Google docs :(

Software

How to make the experience awesome

  • Simple (one-click?) way to install
    • Above software
    • Docker (hurray no VM needed!)
    • Git tools
    • ruby + rails + chruby
  • Simple way to boot back in to OSX for stuff (if on a mac)
    • I think this is pretty standard
  • Full disk crypto + backup
    • Replaces full disk crypto + Time Machine in OSX

Discuss

  • Window manager?
    • Not unity - it makes me sad :(
  • Distro?
    • Ubuntu
      • Best supported
      • Probably want a slight derivation away from the default unity interface - kubuntu? xubuntu?

Rambling from the crowd

  • Chrome is less good
    • Flash?
    • Rendering?
    • Speed?
  • SQL editors in general
    • No Sequel Pro? Is MySQL Workbench better or worse?
  • HipChat.app, Tweetbot.app, Rdio.app, 1Password.app

As far as editors go, you can always use Vim.

KeePassX has a Chrome plugin so you can auto-fill forms.

There are a few MySQL browsers out there. I've tried a handful, there's always http://www.mysql.com/products/workbench/

Chrome "is less good"...?

This statement should be qualified by someone who's actually run a Linux distro on the reg.

I've been using it for sometime apart from some font rendering issues, I've never experienced a problem.
