Setup GitHub Pages "gh-pages" branch as a subfolder within the "master" project on your local checkout - a step-by-step guide.

Intro

Setup GitHub Pages "gh-pages" branch as a subfolder within the "master" project on your local checkout.

IMPORTANT

If you plan on switching between different branches (e.g. git checkout master-experiment then revert back with git checkout master) you will loose your child folder from this tutorial (because it's in your .gitignore and is not part of your master branch).

Benchmarking Nginx with Go

Benchmarking Nginx with Go

There are a lot of ways to serve a Go HTTP application. The best choices depend on each use case. Currently nginx looks to be the standard web server for every new project even though there are other great web servers as well. However, how much is the overhead of serving a Go application behind an nginx server? Do we need some nginx features (vhosts, load balancing, cache, etc) or can you serve directly from Go? If you need nginx, what is the fastest connection mechanism? This are the kind of questions I'm intended to answer here. The purpose of this benchmark is not to tell that Go is faster or slower than nginx. That would be stupid.

So, these are the different settings we are going to compare:

  • Go HTTP standalone (as the control group)
  • Nginx proxy to Go HTTP
  • Nginx fastcgi to Go TCP FastCGI
  • Nginx fastcgi to Go Unix Socket FastCGI

Bare minimum Chrome extension to inject a JS file into the given page when you click on the browser action icon. The script then inserts a new div into the DOM.
// this is the background code...
// listen for our browerAction to be clicked
chrome.browserAction.onClicked.addListener(function (tab) {
// for the current tab, inject the "inject.js" file & execute it
chrome.tabs.executeScript(tab.ib, {
file: 'inject.js'
});
});

How to setup Ngrok with a self-signed SSL cert

Intro

The plan is to create a pair of executables (ngrok and ngrokd) that are connected with a self-signed SSL cert. Since the client and server executables are paired, you won't be able to use any other ngrok to connect to this ngrokd, and vice versa.

DNS

Add two DNS records: one for the base domain and one for the wildcard domain. For example, if your base domain is domain.com, you'll need a record for that and for *.domain.com.

Installing flent on OS/X with homebrew
`pip install flent matplotlib`
`brew install fping`
Netperf in homebrew is installed without demo mode by default, so we need to edit the recipe slightly, also demo mode fails to build under OS/X, requiring a tiny patch to netlib.c ( http://www.netperf.org/pipermail/netperf-talk/2013-December/001162.html ). The following recipe changes the URL to a prepatched version that I host and changes the configure line to enable demo mode.
`brew edit netperf`
```
class Netperf < Formula
desc "Benchmarks performance of many different types of networking"
