Random typography tricks
All learned at NACIS 2014...
# Printing
## Printing with CMYK -- make sure it prints 100% K and no CMY (for black text)
* Because printing the C, M and Y on top of each other will be slightly slightly off. Errors and fuzziness.
* Also reduces eating ink colors
* "Separation preview" -- > "Turn off black" will show rich black vs. non-rich black
* If printing in color keep it to a minimum of channels
# Fonts
## Add a little kerning to some fonts, like Brooklyn Gothic. Helps.
## Eliminating Ligatures ##
OpenType-->leftmost button turns off "Standard Ligatures"
## OpenType in general
OpenType --> Alternate characters
OpenType --> Pro versions available
OpenType --> Squash -- adds a flourish to initial letter (good for oceans and old fashioned stuff)
## Font discovery
* Identafont - online
* Whatthefont - phone app
* flippingtypical.com - online comparison of text from your existing system fonts
### Nexus Font - Font management in Windows to eliminate non-useful fonts on ArcGIS load. Improves ArcGIS performance
# Exporting
## Export to AI at 720 dpi -- adapts to dgi grid by arcmap, makes it divisible by 72 to get correct point sizes
* Newer versions of illustrator don't interpret the file format correctly
* Last documented illustrator spec was 7]
## If ArcGIS exports type to illustrator and the point size is way wrong, nudge one way and then back the other and it will reset to the right amount.
