Setup Mac OS X

I'm in a hospital in Spain and my MacBook was stolen.

Now I bought a new one and need to configure it. I have an external hard drive that backup everything using Time Machine, but I don't want all the crap I had in the old one.

1. Run Software Update

Make sure everything is up to date.

2. Install Xcode and its "Command Line Tools"

Go to App Store and install Xcode.
Then go to the terminal and install "Command Line Tools":

xcode-select --install

Notice this only works for Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9). For earlier versions, continue to use the in-app download in Xcode.

3. Install Homebrew and CLI tools

brew install git

# nodejs cli tools
npm install -g bower
npm install -g docpad
npm install -g grunt-cli
npm install -g jshint

4. Install Softwares

Many softwares can be installed through homebrew-cask which makes the process way simpler:

brew cask install cloudapp
brew cask install dropbox

# browser
brew cask install firefox-aurora
brew cask install google-chrome-canary
brew cask install opera-next

# calendar
brew cask install fantastical

# gif record
brew cask install licecap

# git
brew cask install sourcetree

# irc
brew cask install lime-chat

# markdown edit
brew cask install mou

# notes
brew cask install evernote

# passwords
brew cask install one-password

brew cask install alfred

# sleep
brew cask install caffeine

# terminal
brew cask install iterm2

# torrent
brew cask install u-torrent

# video call
brew cask install skype

# virtual machine
brew cask install virtualbox

# zip, rar, etc
brew cask install the-unarchiver

Unfortunately some apps aren't available through homebrew-cask, so you need to install it manually.

5. Set Chrome Canary as default browser

Launch Safari
Apple ➜ Preferences
General ➜ Default Web Browser
Select “Chrome Canary” from the drop-down menu

6. Install dotfiles

This will install some useful stuff like zsh shell and lots of plugins using oh-my-zsh. Besides that, it will also set a new theme and some useful aliases for the terminal.

7. Generate SSH keys for GitHub

Visit GitHub's official guide for instructions.

From that point on you're going to be able to do some git operations with GitHub \o/

8. Configure Sublime Text

9. Install Alfred Workflows

Visit my Alfred workflow collection repo for instructions.

10. Set NPM user

npm adduser zenorocha

11. Download IE test VMs for VirtualBox

These take a while to download, so maybe do it on a separate day as a background process.
