Fantasy Novels for people sensitive to humans being terrible
Sheri Tepper is a bit more on the SF side but her stuff is good. I view Grass as kind of a feminist response to Dune. Laurie Marks's Fire Logic is one I have queued up, looks good but obviously don't know for myself yet.

@akahn any good/standout introductory books from her in your mind?
@rbxbx Pretty much everything from Tamora Pierce, I've read all of Song of the Lioness and The Immortals. I can also recommend The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede.
