- It is allowed to do masah (wipe with wet hand) on leather socks and better to wash feet fully.
- Here, sock does not refer to modern socks but thick leather socks.
- Socks should have four qualities
- Should be thick enough to support themselves without tying
- It should be possible to walk 3 mile (shar'i) in socks
- Skin should not be visible through them
- Should not absort water
It is therefore permitted to perform masah on three types of socks:
(1) Leather socks covering upto ankles (2) Thick woolen socks with leather woven on the sole (3) Thick woolen socks satisfying the four conditions above
It is not permissible to perform masah on modern (relatively thin) cotton/woolen socks
-
Masah has two faraiz
-
Perform masah on top-side of socks
-
Perform masah covering at least three finger's length on each foot
-
Masah should be done with three fingers.
- Permissible to perform masah three times with same finger if separate water is used each time
- Fingers should be touched in full.
- If only the tips are touched, water must be dripping and three fingers' length must get wet
- If masah was not done but socks got wet on the top surface due to rain etc., masah will be considered performed
- Masah is permissible only if wearer was in wudhu when they were worn
- Only permissible during wudhu, not ghusl
- Masah is allowed within a set period
- For muqeem, one full day
- For musafir, three full days
- Period starts when wudhu is invalidated after wearing socks (not at the time socks were worn)
- If the status of the wearer changes from muqeem to musafir or vice versa, period of the new status will have effect.
- If socks were taken off while being in wudhu, it's permitted to simply wash feet and wear socks again. To perform full wudhu is preferred.
- Socks should not be too torn:
- "Too torn" is defined as three little fingers of the feet.
- Tear can be anywhere in the socks
- If tear is on the fingers, specific finger count will be taken
- Tears of each sock will be considered individually
- If masah is allowed, it should be done on portion which is not torn
- If the seams become undone and as much as three fingers' worth of area is seen through, sock will be considered torn.
- Men and women are equal in the rulings of masah. Masah is only for socks and is not permissible on gloves, caps, veil etc.
