#NICAR16 Hands-on Teacher Information
First, thank you so much for sharing your time and expertise. This conference wouldn't be possible without your commitment to teach. We truly appreciate your help!
Unless specifically noted as having registration required, all hands-on classes are first-come, first-served. Each hands-on room is equipped with 24 student computers (except for Mattie Silks, which has 30) and one for the presenter. IRE staff will limit attendance if the room becomes too crowded; this is at the hotel's request to comply with local fire code. For the same reason, the rooms will already be set with the maximum number of chairs allowed.
These are intended to be short informational sessions (roughly 10-15 minutes) that recap this information and give you a time and place to ask questions about your class in person.
Choose one:
- Thursday, March 10 at 12:30pm in Denver II
- Friday, March 11 at 12:30pm in Denver II
We have assigned coaches to sessions with just one teacher with a few exceptions. They will be there to assist the attendees while you teach. For coaching information, please contact Alex Richards ([email protected]).
All software you have requested for your class should be installed. Any data you sent will be on the machines as well. Please double-check this before your class and let us know if you have any questions or problems. Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, etc.) is the 2010 version. All computers have Chrome, Firefox and have an Internet connection, though Denver V and Denver VI will use wireless and have less bandwidth available.
From the computer desktop, this is the path you'll take to find most everything for your classes on the lab computers:

There is also a shortcut, Hands-on data
, on the desktop that will take you directly to the computer's data folder.
Individual folders that contain submitted data are available in /data/
.
If you're having trouble locating a program, check /software/
or /IRE/software_master/installed/
In a pinch, use the magnifying glass icon at the top right of the screen to do a Spotlight search of the machine's programs, data and documents.
Individual folders that contain submitted data are available in C:\data\
.
Software is mostly installed in the usual fashion on a PC — into a Program Files directory — though a few programs, like Refine and Tabula, are installed in folders right off of C:\
, i.e. C:\tabula\
.
You can also directly search for files and programs from the Start menu in the lower left of the screen.
We're using a virtual environment setup that's similar to the one we've used for the Mac labs in previous years. For more information, we've put together a brief guide for our Python teachers; please contact Alex with any questions or concerns.
If you're encountering problems or find items that are missing, please have your students double-click the refresh
script icon on the computer desktop. It quickly restores all of the training files to their original condition. Please note, however, that it will not delete items from the desktop. On Macs, this process will require car16 as the password.
###Passwords
For admin access, connecting to MySQL and other tasks on the lab computers that require a password: car16
###Other issues not mentioned here
If you have any questions or run into any problems at all, please do not hesitate to contact an IRE staff member. You may also call or text Alex Richards, Liz Lucas or Megan Luther.
Thanks again! We’re looking forward to a great conference.
