IronMario Rules

IronMario

IronMario is a Super Mario 64 challenge created by DGR_Dave.

Inspired by the brutal difficulty of challenges like IronMon, created by iateyourpie, IronMario pushes players to their limits by combining extreme randomization with a no-damage rule.

If you do create other offshoots/rules of this challenge, please make sure to shout out this challenge.

Ridding my home network of IP addresses

Recent changes in the tech scene have made it clear that relying on commercial companies to provide services I rely on isn't a good strategy in the long term, and given that Tailscale is so effective these days as a remote-access system, I've gradually been expanding a small collection of self-hosted web apps and services running on my home network.

Until now they've mainly been addressed using their IP addresses and random high ports on the internal LAN, for example:

Installing OpenBSD 7.3-current on a VisionFive2

Here are some concise instructions for getting OpenBSD 7.3-current running on a StarFive VisionFive 2 (v1.3B, though from other reports referenced below, it sounds like the v1.2 boards can also be made to work).

You will need:

  • An SD card of at least 1GB
  • An eMMC module attached to the board (though see below for a variation that should work to install directly to sd card)
  • Internet access
  • A USB TTL serial adapter that supports 3.3V (some of these support multiple voltages, but if yours only supports other voltages and not 3.3 it will either not work or damage your board!)

So you want to modify the text of a PDF by hand

So you want to modify the text of a PDF by hand...

If you, like me, resent every dollar spent on commercial PDF tools, you might want to know how to change the text content of a PDF without having to pay for Adobe Acrobat or another PDF tool. I didn't see an obvious open-source tool that lets you dig into PDF internals, but I did discover a few useful facts about how PDFs are structured that I think may prove useful to others (or myself) in the future. They are recorded here. They are surely not universally applicable --
the PDF standard is truly Byzantine -- but they worked for my case.

CenturyLink PPPoE and 6rd on an OpenBSD router

Replacing the CenturyLink provided ethernet router with OpenBSD

Unfortunately CenturyLink provisions their fiber to the home with a PPPoE authentication over vlan 201, this makes replacing the router more difficult than it should be. I also had to call CenturyLink support to get the password for the PPPoE connection.

cnmac0 is the egress interface on my EdgeRouter Lite.

You also need to add match on pppoe0 scrub (max-mss 1452)
