Steps to Terminal Enlightenment on a Mac

Hopefully you'll Live Long and Prosper, so I don't mean terminal as in "you gonna die". This is a somewhat opinionated article on configuring a macOS machine with:

• iTerm2
• Z-shell
• Oh My ZSH! (mostly obsolete now)
• Powerlevel9k
• Nerd Fonts, which are Powerline-derived fonts, particularly my favorite - Hack Nerd

Cheat Sheets are greate but they are not a substitute for learning the framework and reading the documentation as we most certainly have not covered every potential example here. Please refer to the Rails Command Line Docs for more information.

Reference

You can get all of this information on the command line.

rails generate with no generator name will output a list of all available generators and some information about global options. rails generate GENERATOR --help will list the options that can be passed to the specified generator.

This is the list of exit codes for wget:

0       No problems occurred
1       Generic error code
2       Parse error — for instance, when parsing command-line options, the .wgetrc or .netrc…
3       File I/O error
4       Network failure
5       SSL verification failure
6       Username/password authentication failure
7       Protocol errors

Ruby on Rails best practices

Code style

• Use UTF-8. It’s 21 century, 8bit encodings dead now.
• Use 2 space indent, not tabs
• Use Unix-style line endings
• Keep lines not longer than 80 chars
• Remove trailing whitespace
