1960s
- software produced by academics or corporate researchers often shared as a public domain
- hardware selling bussines, source code distributed with the software itself
- 1969 ARPANET simplified the exchane of software code
1970s
- programming language compilers matured and evolved
- growing software industry, increasing it's cost
- first restrictive licenses
- AT&T distributed early version of UNIX to government and academic researchers for no cost but with no permissions to modify and redistribute
1980s
- UNIX become widespread, AT&T stopped the free distribution and charged for system patches
- companies starting to charge money for software licenses
- Richard Matthew Stallman, Harvard student (70), MIT programmer (71), AI research assistant (75)
- Centronics with lots of signals, "paper jammed" signal was not working
- NDA - ('84) GNU Project, GNU operating system
- '85: GNU Manifesto
'85: Free Software Foundation
'87: GNU C Compiler
'89: GNU GPL v1.0
'89: most of the GNU OS is ready
- '89: Cygnus Solutions founded to prove that the free software can work as a bussiness model
1990s
- Linus Torvalds created Linux kernel (minix - freax)
- stock exchanges run Linux kernel
Red Hat
- founded in 1993, Bob Young, Mark Ewing
- first Red Hat Linux distribution in 1994
- bussiness model - "support, service", stabilize and make accessible
- Red Hat became publicly traded company 1999 and acquired Cygnus solutions
- Red Hat Linux was released every 6 months (the only source of revenue)
- 2003 subscription model - no upgrade fee
- 2006 Red Hat listed NYSE
- 2012 Red Hat reached $1bn revenue
- 2014 more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies used Red Hat solutions
