why this doesn't works in a shell script
This runs very well in a shell script (at least in GNU bash >= 3.2). But please do not provide too much information about your issue.
I didn't said "bash", in plain shell, it doesn't works.
Well, bash is also a shell. If you mean the bourne-shell ('sh'), that won't work, because AFAIK there is no regex implemented. This script is designed for bash and will probably not work in other shells (in sh, zsh and fish definitely not).
