Since Google is killing Reader, I've been trying out Feedly. And on the surface, it looks slick. On top of that, it automatically syncs all my Reader stuff. Awesome feature.
However, there have been some issues.
I like to be able to easily scan my list of feeds to see what's new. To facilitate this, I switched almost immediately to Feedly's "Titles" view. I tried this the first time from an on-feed settings menu, and I liked it, so I checked the Preferences page, and found that there was an option to set this view as the default on all feeds and categories. Great! :click:
But it didn't work. I still had the "Magazine" view on a few of my categories. I had to manually set these categories to use Titles. Bah.
And the icing on the cake: the settings don't seem to live "in the cloud". I made some changes at work, checked at home, and my settings were non-existent. Organizational changes, theme changes, and display settings were completely different.
Feedly managed to lose one of my feeds. I could see it on my left-hand menu, under FEEDLY.OTHER, but I couldn't find it in my Organize options, in order to put it into a category.
Also, when I clicked UNCATEGORIZED, the FEEDLY.OTHER category would open up instead. Lame.
Again, more of a disappointment, but I like to view my feed items on the original pages. I enjoy seeing comics, posts, and videos in the context for which they were created, rather than a sanitized feed format. I was able to easily create a user style (via the Stylish extension) to extend Google's "Open original" link to cover the entire feed title.
Based on my inspection of the DOM elements involved on the items in Feedly, its' going to be a lot more difficult. Feedly's "other tools" slide out on mouse over, and slide away on mouse out. In addition, there's no HTML class attribute applied to the external link, so writing a selector that applies to those links and only those links will be more difficult.
