07/03/2013 09:56:55 Sacha Chua: You made it!
07/03/2013 09:57:07 Sacha Chua: I think you may need to click on the mic icon near the top to enable it, if it isn't enabled yet
07/03/2013 09:57:53 Charo Nuguid: Yeah, I'm having trouble with my mic and anymeeting at the moment. Still figuring out what's wrong.
07/03/2013 09:58:10 Sacha Chua: If you hover over the mic, you can get to the Audio options screen.
07/03/2013 09:58:22 Charo Nuguid: yup.
07/03/2013 09:58:27 Sacha Chua: Awesome! =)
07/03/2013 09:58:37 Charo Nuguid: Just that anymeeting isn't playing nice with Ubuntu. :D
07/03/2013 09:58:41 Sacha Chua: Oh noes!
07/03/2013 09:59:01 Sacha Chua: I'll keep playing around. Do you have a favourite web conferencing thing?
07/03/2013 09:59:01 Charo Nuguid: Let me try going out and back in again. Must be something with adobe permissions.
07/03/2013 09:59:09 Sacha Chua: Sure!
07/03/2013 09:59:39 Sacha Chua: Hey Justin! =D You made it! =)
07/03/2013 10:00:15 Justin Jereza from Makati City: hello. it's been a while. =)
07/03/2013 10:00:23 Sacha Chua: Yes, it's been ages! =D
07/03/2013 10:00:26 Justin Jereza from Makati City: something's wrong with my microphone i think.
07/03/2013 10:00:32 Justin Jereza from Makati City: just a sec. =)
07/03/2013 10:00:45 Sacha Chua: Charo said she was having problems with her mic on Ubuntu, too.
07/03/2013 10:01:03 Justin Jereza from Makati City: i'm on osx.
07/03/2013 10:01:16 Justin Jereza from Makati City: i haven't had problems with google hangouts before.
07/03/2013 10:01:19 Sacha Chua: Mmm... If you hover over the mic icon, you can get to the audio options screen.
07/03/2013 10:01:31 Sacha Chua: I'm experimenting with AnyMeeting because Google Hangout has a 15-person limit (used to be 10)
07/03/2013 10:02:04 Justin Jereza from Makati City: yeah... we tend to max out hangouts.
07/03/2013 10:02:13 Sacha Chua: and I figured it would be fun to catch up with or get to know people, and it's a good way to practise talking to people. ;)
07/03/2013 10:02:14 Justin Jereza from Makati City: can you hear me now?
07/03/2013 10:02:37 Justin Jereza from Makati City: i don't hear anything here. >_<
07/03/2013 10:02:51 Sacha Chua: Oh noeees!
07/03/2013 10:03:19 Sacha Chua: I tested it with someone yesterday, so we confirmed audio works... Do other sounds on your system play?
07/03/2013 10:03:22 Justin Jereza from Makati City: my audio settings say my mic works now.
07/03/2013 10:03:31 Justin Jereza from Makati City: let me turn on another box. =)
07/03/2013 10:08:15 Sacha Chua: quantifiedawesome.com
07/03/2013 10:08:40 Sacha Chua: I got tired of wearing the same things again and again, so this sort of helps me load-balance it. =)
07/03/2013 10:09:46 Sacha Chua: Hello and welcome! =)
07/03/2013 10:10:02 Sacha Chua: Thanks for joining me in this experiment with catching up or getting to know people.
07/03/2013 10:10:39 Justin Jereza from Makati City: hello remi. =)
07/03/2013 10:11:01 Rémi Vanicat: hello
07/03/2013 10:11:24 Sacha Chua: Hello again Charo!
07/03/2013 10:11:31 Rémi Vanicat: sory my mic is not working for some raison
07/03/2013 10:11:42 Sacha Chua: It's okay, text chat is nice too. =)
07/03/2013 10:12:35 Charo Nuguid: Weird that my mic isn't working in Anymeeting. Works everywhere else. :P
07/03/2013 10:12:58 Sacha Chua: What brought you here? =) What are you interested in?
07/03/2013 10:13:37 Justin Jereza from Makati City: charo, a tiny bar popped up at the top of my browser window asking for permission for cam and mic.
07/03/2013 10:13:49 Rémi Vanicat: Well I was curious after the google plus metting,
07/03/2013 10:14:46 Charo Nuguid: Justin, yeah. I already tried that. Still won't work. :P
07/03/2013 10:14:49 Sacha Chua: I was curious too! =) Trying to decide between that and Anymeeting
07/03/2013 10:15:40 Rémi Vanicat: And I was curious to now if I could follow a discution in english
07/03/2013 10:15:50 Sacha Chua: That's great practice, for sure. =)
07/03/2013 10:18:02 Justin Jereza from Makati City: sure. text chat it is. =)
07/03/2013 10:18:04 Sacha Chua: The audio is a little choppy. Shall we switch to using the text chat mostly?
07/03/2013 10:18:05 Charo Nuguid: yeah. turned off my mic first. :D
07/03/2013 10:18:30 Sacha Chua: Turned off my mic to make me use the text chat more. =) And to avoid the typing noises...
07/03/2013 10:18:30 Charo Nuguid: Aww. And I was so looking forward to using the new mic. LOL!
07/03/2013 10:18:50 Charo Nuguid: So what was the question again?
07/03/2013 10:18:53 Sacha Chua: Well, maybe with the next hangout, which will probably be on Google! =)
07/03/2013 10:18:55 Justin Jereza from Makati City: what's the new mic? i got a cheap 250 peso genius for flight sim use a few months back. =D
07/03/2013 10:19:14 Sacha Chua: I was curious about virtual hangouts/meetups - have people tried that? What's it like? What makes it work or not work?
07/03/2013 10:19:30 Sacha Chua: Justin mentioned that he has an animé-related hangout every so often.
07/03/2013 10:19:42 Rémi Vanicat: I only test one to one discution, or one to many text chat.
07/03/2013 10:19:53 Justin Jereza from Makati City: i think somebody has to carry the conversation most of the time. we tend to shut up while somebody else talks for a bit. :D
07/03/2013 10:19:55 Charo Nuguid: Mine is just a cdr king thingy
07/03/2013 10:20:38 Sacha Chua: Remi: I'm used to many-to-many chats because of IRC - a small chat box like this may be hard to follow, but maybe Google Hangout will be easier next time.
07/03/2013 10:21:15 Justin Jereza from Makati City: it doesn't look like the chat box can be resized.
07/03/2013 10:21:18 Sacha Chua: Justino: Hah, I still have to work at carrying conversations. When I have tea parties or get-togethers, I usually let other people talk while I run around making more food.
07/03/2013 10:21:25 Sacha Chua: Justin, that is.
07/03/2013 10:21:29 Rémi Vanicat: Yes IRC is a wonderful tool for a lot of things
07/03/2013 10:21:31 Sacha Chua: Can't type, it's too early in the morning for me. ;)
07/03/2013 10:21:34 Charo Nuguid: In my case, I used virtual hangouts (anymeeting) for my reviews with students. I'd rather use Google Hangout Party, but it only has a max of 10 from my end.
07/03/2013 10:21:59 Sacha Chua: I heard that Hangout increased its limit to 15. =) It was 10 a few weeks ago when I tried it, but it might be interesting to try it again with the new limit.
07/03/2013 10:22:12 Charo Nuguid: There are pros and cons. Like Anymeeting right now. Won't exactly recognize my mic (PC or external)
07/03/2013 10:22:14 Rémi Vanicat: Well, I could try this with my student too...
07/03/2013 10:22:14 Sacha Chua: And then it's first come first served, but people can deal with that. =)
07/03/2013 10:22:20 Sacha Chua: Remi: Ooh, cool! What do you teach?
07/03/2013 10:22:27 Rémi Vanicat: Math
07/03/2013 10:22:38 Sacha Chua: Charo: You mentioned that you use hangouts with your students - what's that like?
07/03/2013 10:23:13 Sacha Chua: Maybe you can share some tips for Remi.
07/03/2013 10:23:26 Charo Nuguid: Mostly did Java reviews with them. I post the questions online and they answer by themselves.
07/03/2013 10:23:40 Sacha Chua: Remi: What level do you teach - grade school, high school, university? =)
07/03/2013 10:23:46 Charo Nuguid: Then we discuss it after 10 minutes of answering.
07/03/2013 10:24:11 Rémi Vanicat: My student are 16-18 (I belive this is high scool in US)
07/03/2013 10:24:14 Sacha Chua: Interesting... like a virtual class?
07/03/2013 10:24:48 Charo Nuguid: It was a bit hard back then though. But I found new plugins for Google Docs (Doctopus and Flubaroo) that would help make answering quizzes online even easier (and faster). :D
07/03/2013 10:25:01 Sacha Chua: Remi: Yup! My stepdaughter is 15 and in high school.
07/03/2013 10:25:12 Sacha Chua: Charo: Oooh, those sound interesting.
07/03/2013 10:25:19 Justin Jereza from Makati City: brb
07/03/2013 10:25:26 Sacha Chua: Justin: In your hangouts, do you use any of the Google Hangout tools?
07/03/2013 10:25:32 Sacha Chua: (you can answer when you get back =) )
07/03/2013 10:25:56 Rémi Vanicat: There is in France framasoft that has a specialize pseudo googe-doc for teaching, but I didn't test it yet
07/03/2013 10:26:58 Rémi Vanicat: The main advandage is that it is open source code.
07/03/2013 10:27:16 Sacha Chua: Remi: Ooh, that's nice!
07/03/2013 10:27:44 Rémi Vanicat: It's called frampad.
07/03/2013 10:27:45 Charo Nuguid: Checking our framasoft. Might be helpful on my end as well. :)
07/03/2013 10:28:12 Sacha Chua: I've been playing around with mural.ly, which bills itself as a Google Docs for visual people.
07/03/2013 10:28:26 Sacha Chua: I see your video now! =)
07/03/2013 10:28:29 Sacha Chua: Oh hi!
07/03/2013 10:28:46 Charo Nuguid: No english version? :D
07/03/2013 10:28:52 Sacha Chua: I want to teach more, so I'm always curious about teaching tools.
07/03/2013 10:29:09 Sacha Chua: (Maybe helping people learn Emacs, or sketchnoting, or this Quantified Self stuff?)
07/03/2013 10:29:49 Rémi Vanicat: Charo: I don't kno, it's a Franch association specilized in making solution in Franch (and translating stuff to French)
07/03/2013 10:30:07 Sacha Chua: all: What are you learning more about these days?
07/03/2013 10:30:10 Charo Nuguid: Remi: Aah.
07/03/2013 10:30:18 Charo Nuguid: Google Go. :D
07/03/2013 10:30:35 Charo Nuguid: And LaTeX
07/03/2013 10:31:04 Rémi Vanicat: I would like a google doc in laTeX
07/03/2013 10:31:12 Charo Nuguid: using LaTeX a lot more nowadays to create my manuals. Easier to version control as well (specially since I'm using git).
07/03/2013 10:31:24 Rémi Vanicat: that said emacs+magit+github is a workable solution
07/03/2013 10:31:26 Sacha Chua: There's a Wordpress plugin for LaTeX. =) Found out about it when I was looking at org2blog, I think.
07/03/2013 10:31:29 Charo Nuguid: Yeah. Wish they'd support LaTeX in Google Docs.
07/03/2013 10:31:50 Sacha Chua: Charo: Quite a few people use Org Mode as a lighter markup that exports to LaTeX, too. =)
07/03/2013 10:32:07 Sacha Chua: Remi: Oh, so Emacs is probably how we're connected! =)
07/03/2013 10:32:23 Charo Nuguid: But... I don't use emacs. :D
07/03/2013 10:32:29 Sacha Chua: Charo: Well. ;)
07/03/2013 10:32:49 Sacha Chua: Charo: Sounds like something that can easily be fixed. ;) Kidding!
07/03/2013 10:32:51 Rémi Vanicat: Sacha: I begin to do it (use org mode for latex), but I stopped because doing latex directly Is more flexible
07/03/2013 10:33:12 Charo Nuguid: With LaTeX, I use it mainly for Beamer.
07/03/2013 10:33:14 Sacha Chua: Remi: Makes perfect sense. =) If you're comfortable with a tool, it makes sense to use it instead of something in between.
07/03/2013 10:33:15 Rémi Vanicat: Sacha: I begin to look at you blog after a video of you and Carsten I believe
07/03/2013 10:33:33 Sacha Chua: Remi: Oh yes, that! I have one with Bastien, too.
07/03/2013 10:33:42 Charo Nuguid: It's faster for me to create the presentation slides than using MS Office or LibreOffice.
07/03/2013 10:33:45 Rémi Vanicat: I've seen it also
07/03/2013 10:34:14 Sacha Chua: Charo: Good for you! =) Most of my presentations are just collections of images, so I really should just write a script that composes them all into a PDF or something.
07/03/2013 10:34:17 Rémi Vanicat: Charo: I've to agree, and when you put some weird math in the mix, it's deffinitive a better tool
07/03/2013 10:34:32 Charo Nuguid: Indeed!
07/03/2013 10:34:34 Sacha Chua: (I don't suppose anyone's got any recommendations for that one...)
07/03/2013 10:35:14 Sacha Chua: I remember writing my school stuff in LaTeX and being asked what I printed something in, because LaTeX typesets so beautifully.
07/03/2013 10:35:35 Rémi Vanicat: Sacha: I've already create some key-macro in Emacs to convert a copy of a dired buffer into a LaTeX file with lot of img in it
07/03/2013 10:35:35 Charo Nuguid: And making manuals/handouts using LaTeX Beamer is so much easier. I'm not restricted to having to squeeze everything in one page. :)
07/03/2013 10:35:51 Sacha Chua: Oh? How's that?
07/03/2013 10:36:47 Rémi Vanicat: Emacs key macro I always a neet-tool for some light text manipulation
07/03/2013 10:37:20 Sacha Chua: Remi: It's so nice to be able to make yourself shortcuts like that. =)
07/03/2013 10:37:22 Charo Nuguid: I usually turn my handouts as sort of like manuals. So I have a beamer file that points to a notes file after every slide.
07/03/2013 10:37:36 Charo Nuguid: then generate slides and handouts at the same time.
07/03/2013 10:37:45 Charo Nuguid: I still have to write about it in my blog. LOL!
07/03/2013 10:38:06 Sacha Chua: Charo: I'd love to read that post. =)
07/03/2013 10:38:33 Sacha Chua: Charo: Still at http://www.thegeekettespeaketh.com/ , or is there a better place to read your updates?
07/03/2013 10:38:41 Charo Nuguid: yup. still there.
07/03/2013 10:39:07 Sacha Chua: Remi: Do you blog?
07/03/2013 10:39:19 Rémi Vanicat: I should realy use my Blog for some stuff... I rarely do anything there
07/03/2013 10:39:30 Rémi Vanicat: http://blog.lot-of-stuff.info/
07/03/2013 10:39:53 Sacha Chua: Remi: Looking at your Github profile - I see you use Ledger too? =)
07/03/2013 10:40:16 Rémi Vanicat: Yes, everything in Emacs. Well not yet, but...
07/03/2013 10:40:35 Justin Jereza: hmmm... this will take a while. >_<
07/03/2013 10:40:41 Sacha Chua: Justin: Mm?
07/03/2013 10:41:23 Sacha Chua: Remi: I've started using Org Babel to embed some of my Ledger commands in an .org file. Pretty handy, and nicer than my previous workflow.
07/03/2013 10:41:51 Sacha Chua: I don't think I've written about it yet... Hmm, I should write a blog post about that.
07/03/2013 10:42:02 Rémi Vanicat: I've to give some where my org-mode file that use ledger and R to make graphics about accounting
07/03/2013 10:42:27 Sacha Chua: I haven't written much about finances because it seems to be a bit of a taboo topic... I'd love to compare notes with other people, though, especially when it comes to graphing patterns in expenses or other things.
07/03/2013 10:43:13 Charo Nuguid: Oh, speaking of blogs. I moved away from Wordpress. I'm using Octopress now.
07/03/2013 10:43:17 Sacha Chua: Also, someone asked me to do a screencast tutorial on ledger, so I'd either have to make reasonable fake data or just use my own.
07/03/2013 10:43:24 Rémi Vanicat: I don't have a solution that please me that much, but R open a lot of possibilities...
07/03/2013 10:43:31 Sacha Chua: Octopress is increasingly popular! =)
07/03/2013 10:44:07 Rémi Vanicat: I'm using ikiwiki, but its interface is sometime laking...
07/03/2013 10:44:09 Sacha Chua: R is on my to-learn list.
07/03/2013 10:44:46 Rémi Vanicat: Well, my goverment decided that I must learn more stat, so I learned some R at the same tiime
07/03/2013 10:44:57 Sacha Chua:
07/03/2013 10:45:05 Rémi Vanicat: (I had to learn stat to teach them...)
07/03/2013 10:45:26 Sacha Chua: Well, that makes sense. I remember trying to teach something I was learning at the same time... it was a litlte nerve-wracking.
07/03/2013 10:46:22 Rémi Vanicat: Yes, I was glad I did'nt had to teach anything complex in stat....
07/03/2013 10:46:33 Sacha Chua: I've been thinking of re-making some kind of personal wiki system... I'll check out ikiwiki and Octopress again, maybe one of those will be a good fit.
07/03/2013 10:47:21 Rémi Vanicat: I like ikiwiki because I can edit localy my file in Emacs, and use git to send the result on my blog
07/03/2013 10:47:53 Sacha Chua: This is great! I've picked up a couple of things to learn more about - thanks for sharing. =) And it's always nice meeting people, too! =D
07/03/2013 10:47:57 Charo Nuguid: kinda the same thing with octopress.
07/03/2013 10:48:32 Rémi Vanicat: Charo: I've to check for it then.
07/03/2013 10:48:45 Sacha Chua: I'm experimenting with this hangout thing - what would make it better for you? I'd love to have a space, someday, where people can drop in and swap tips with each other once in a while.
07/03/2013 10:49:27 Charo Nuguid: It's more like a ruby app you install on your local computer. Once that's done, you can just use emacs to create your posts and run the ruby app to generate the static files and push to your server. :)
07/03/2013 10:49:59 Rémi Vanicat: Well, it is fun, the problem here is the text area is too small for when mic don't work...
07/03/2013 10:50:20 Charo Nuguid: Well, this is already nice. Just put together a bi-weekly (or monthly?) thing where people can just enter and chat. Throw in a few questions to lead the conversation, like what you're doing.
07/03/2013 10:50:27 Sacha Chua: Yeah, absolutely! I'm going to try Google Hangout again for the next one, as the chat thing is bigger there.
07/03/2013 10:50:35 Charo Nuguid: Now, if only the mics work flawlessly on Anymeeting. :P
07/03/2013 10:51:21 Sacha Chua: Charo: Maybe every ~2 weeks, alternating timezones, so that people have a convenient monthly one they can drop into if they want. =)
07/03/2013 10:51:30 Charo Nuguid: Yup. That would be great. :)
07/03/2013 10:51:48 Rémi Vanicat: Yes,
07/03/2013 10:51:50 Charo Nuguid: It's a bit like what's happening here right now for offline meetups.
07/03/2013 10:52:00 Sacha Chua: I really like being part of these group conversations - I learn about things I might never ask about on my own. =)
07/03/2013 10:52:29 Charo Nuguid: We have a growing community called Open Coffee (mainly meetups for startups). I
07/03/2013 10:52:54 Charo Nuguid: It's grown to about three weekly meetups (1 in Taguig, 1 in Makati, 1 in Ortigas)
07/03/2013 10:53:16 Charo Nuguid: And on different weeks. Mostly to accomodate people from those different areas.
07/03/2013 10:53:38 Sacha Chua: We have one of those too. =) I haven't made it out to one of them yet (it's early!), but maybe I'll give it a try.
07/03/2013 10:53:57 Sacha Chua: Do folks mind if I post the text chat, in case other people find your tips useful?
07/03/2013 10:54:12 Charo Nuguid: I'm ok with that.
07/03/2013 10:54:22 Rémi Vanicat: I'm ok too
07/03/2013 10:54:43 Sacha Chua: Awesome, thanks for sharing. =D
07/03/2013 10:54:53 Charo Nuguid: You should drop by Open Coffee! You learn a lot from the people there. And they ten to help you with whatever you're doing. :)
07/03/2013 10:54:54 Rémi Vanicat: Thanks for inviting us
07/03/2013 10:55:07 Charo Nuguid: Thanks as well for the invite! :)
07/03/2013 10:55:21 Sacha Chua: Thanks for coming to this highly experimental thing! =) Let's figure it out together - it'll be interesting to make it work.
07/03/2013 10:55:57 Charo Nuguid: :)
07/03/2013 10:56:11 Sacha Chua: All right then. =D We'll see about scheduling the next one - I'll post details on my blog, on Google Plus, and at http://sach.ac/hangout
07/03/2013 10:56:28 Sacha Chua: If you have any preferences for time or day, please tell me - I'd be happy to accommodate them!
07/03/2013 10:57:01 Sacha Chua: Thanks, and looking forward to seeing you again sometime!
07/03/2013 10:57:14 Rémi Vanicat: Thanks
07/03/2013 10:57:18 Charo Nuguid: Well, my schedules are erratic. So I'll just try to catch whichever schedule you come up with. :D
07/03/2013 10:57:26 Charo Nuguid: Looking forward to seeing you again!
07/03/2013 10:57:31 Charo Nuguid: Nice to see you Remi! :D
07/03/2013 10:57:54 Rémi Vanicat: Thanks, nice to see you too.
07/03/2013 10:59:18 Sacha Chua: Now I have to figure out how to actually save the text chat... Definitely going with Google Hangout next time... I'll keep the meeting open while I copy things.
07/03/2013 11:00:05 Charo Nuguid: Oh! normally there's a record there somewhere.
07/03/2013 11:01:42 Charo Nuguid: Ok. I'll head on out ahead of you guys. :) Need to get some sleep. I actually had to absent myself from class today due to a really bad allergy. I'm still groggy from meds. :D
07/03/2013 11:02:11 Charo Nuguid: Have a good day everyone!
07/03/2013 11:02:22 Rémi Vanicat: Good day to you.
07/03/2013 11:02:34 Sacha Chua: Charo: Oh no, I hope you feel better soon...
07/03/2013 11:02:42 Sacha Chua: See you!
07/03/2013 11:02:49 Charo Nuguid: Bye bye! :)
07/03/2013 11:04:59 Sacha Chua: Hi Emily!
07/03/2013 11:05:21 Sacha Chua: Thanks for joining - what got you curious about this? =)
07/03/2013 11:06:10 Sacha Chua: We're actually in the process of wrapping up (hence people leaving), but my schedule is flexible, so I'm happy to stay and chat with you a while. Text chat is fine.
07/03/2013 11:06:25 Sacha Chua: Oh! Emily's gone, odd. Oh well!
07/03/2013 11:06:28 Justin Jereza: well, i guess i missed the entire thing. >_<
07/03/2013 11:06:53 Sacha Chua: Hah, don't worry, there's the text chat. I'm looking forward to learning more about Octopress and Ikiwiki (thanks Remi!).
07/03/2013 11:07:46 Justin Jereza: gf arrived and was ranting about the building association board meeting.
07/03/2013 11:08:11 Justin Jereza: anymeeting chat seems more tolerable when you have a 1920x1200 screen. =D
07/03/2013 11:08:29 Sacha Chua: Yeah, but it doesn't let me select all and copy that, I have to select things one by one! =|
07/03/2013 11:09:22 Justin Jereza: yep. just tried to select everything. didn't work.
07/03/2013 11:10:20 Justin Jereza: gotta give it to hangout. automatic transcript when you end everything.
07/03/2013 11:10:58 Justin Jereza: oh, about the hangout tools. we do use them a bit.
07/03/2013 11:11:16 Justin Jereza: mostly to add an overlay on the video so that people know who's talking.
07/03/2013 11:12:17 Justin Jereza: there's the other silly stuff as well like post processing on video but aside from being amusing, doesn't really seem to contribute much if at all. another nice feature though is desktop sharing. we even watch LoL games together.
07/03/2013 11:12:44 Sacha Chua: Oh yeah, we started using Lower Third too.
07/03/2013 11:13:04 Justin Jereza: was trying to remember what it was called. =)
07/03/2013 11:13:11 Sacha Chua: Mm, sharing is fast enough for that?
07/03/2013 11:13:42 Justin Jereza: standard desktop sharing is fast enough. it slows to a crawl with games on my end though. bandwidth issues.
07/03/2013 11:14:19 Sacha Chua: Heh.
07/03/2013 11:18:02 Justin Jereza: anyway, i guess the current session is pretty much over. catch you on future sessions instead? =)
07/03/2013 11:21:06 Justin Jereza: bye
07/03/2013 11:28:39 Sacha Chua: Okay, copied most of it. =) Thanks again! Bye!
