A upgrade log of IBM Thinkpad X60.

IBM Think-Pad X60 Upgrade Log

These day, I tried to upgrade second-hand X60 IBM Think-pad.

It is a really old model (Intel Core 2 Duo ), but still good to use.

It has facing several problems and I am trying to use minimum cost (maybe) to increase the user experience :P

Before that...

Clean the laptop from dust !!!

Be careful when you disassemble X60, especially the hard disk slot.

During unscrewing, the screw get strip. Then I use a soldering iron to heat the strip (just a while) so that it can be easily get out (don;t worry, its harmless XD).

Hardware Upgrade

Replace the original Intel PCI wireless NIC

  • Stock Intel NIC has heat problem (right bottom, right plamrest)

  • Replace by TP-Link WN725N, no-need to install driver manually, just plug and use

SanDisk 120 GB SSD

  • Model: SDSSDA-120G-G27
  • Up to 530MB/s, but x60 use SATA1.5, performance is bounded to 150MB/s
  • Buy it because it is cheap (HKD190) and HDD suck (5X MB/s, also heat problem)

New battery bought from Tmall

Software Tweak

Operating system

Linux Lite 4.x (based on Ubuntu)

Power management

TLP (Linux Advanced Power Management)

Turn off bluetooth and builtin NIC on boot

SSD optimize

  • TRIM

  • Alignment

    • Should be done already (unless you are not using modern FS)
  • Disable Ext4 journaling
