Chromebook Setup Options

Option 1: Stay in Chrome OS

If you're writing bare-bones javascript for the browser, creating Chrome Apps and Extensions, or using remote coding apps like cloud9, Koding, or Nitrous, you may not need to install Ubuntu. Some tutorials can be done entirely within the browser. The tradeoff is that you won't have a full-featured command line, and you may hit a point where you can't install something that you need.

To start coding within Chrome OS, install Text or Caret as a text editor. (Text stores files in Google Docs and Caret stores the files locally on your machine, which may help you choose.) After that, you're good to go, since Chromebooks come with a browser installed.

Last week, a number of publications ran a story about 1,000's of apps allegedly being vulnerable due to an SSL bug in AFNetworking. These articles contain a number of inaccurate and misleading statements on this matter.

We are publishing this response to clarify and correct these statements.

Background Information

For those not familiar with AFNetworking, here are some relevant details about the library for this story:

• AFNetworking is an open source, third-party library that provides convenience functionality on top of Apple's built-in frameworks.
• One component of AFNetworking is AFSecurityPolicy, which handles authentication challenges according to a policy configured by the application. This includes the evaluation of X.509 certificates which servers send back when connecting over HTTPS.

Fibur

Fibur is a library that allows concurrency during Ruby I/O operations without needing to make use of callback systems. Traditionally in Ruby, to achieve concurrency during blocking I/O operations, programmers would make use of Fibers and callbacks. Fibur eliminates the need for wrapping your I/O calls with Fibers and a callback. It allows you to write your blocking I/O calls the way you normally would, and still have concurrent execution during those I/O calls.
