How effectively delete a git submodule.

To remove a submodule you need to:

  • Delete the relevant section from the .gitmodules file.
  • Stage the .gitmodules changes git add .gitmodules
  • Delete the relevant section from .git/config.
  • Run git rm --cached path_to_submodule (no trailing slash).
  • Run rm -rf .git/modules/path_to_submodule (no trailing slash).
  • Commit git commit -m "Removed submodule "
  • Delete the now untracked submodule files rm -rf path_to_submodule

Travis-CI submodules
# Use https (public access) instead of git for git-submodules. This modifies only Travis-CI behavior!
# disable the default submodule logic
git:
submodules: false
# use sed to replace the SSH URL with the public URL, then init and update submodules
before_install:
- sed -i 's/[email protected]:/https:\/\/github.com\//' .gitmodules
- git submodule update --init --recursive

disable emacs asking following git symbolink
; 当要打开一个symbolink的时候,如果symbollink到一个被git(或者其他vc)管理的文件时,emacs老问
; Symbolic link to Git-controlled source file; follow link? (y or n)
; 配置下这个变量就好了
(setq vc-follow-symlinks nil)
; nil 表示 不要问,no
; ask 表示每次都问
; t 表示follow
