Check instructions here --> https://github.com/nodesource/distributions/blob/master/README.md#deb
Since Kali is Debian based what will apply is:
# Node.js LTS (v14.x):
# Using Debian, as root
curl -fsSL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_lts.x | bash -
apt-get install -y nodejs
# OR
curl -fsSL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_lts.x | sudo bash -
apt-get install -y nodejs
if you get "the trying to overwrite error" i.e.
Preparing to unpack .../nodejs_14.16.0-deb-1nodesource1_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking nodejs (14.16.0-deb-1nodesource1) over (12.21.0~dfsg-1) ...
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/nodejs_14.16.0-deb-1nodesource1_amd64.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/doc/nodejs/api/packages.html', which is also in package nodejs-doc 12.21.0~dfsg-1
dpkg-deb: error: paste subprocess was killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/nodejs_14.16.0-deb-1nodesource1_amd64.deb
needrestart is being skipped since dpkg has failed
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
you can resolve it with
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/nodejs_14.16.0-deb-1nodesource1_amd64.deb
sudo apt --fix-broken install
