Hi Patrons!

Surprise! Bonus episode! This time I'm back with an interview with Charlie Jane Anders, author of The City in the Middle of the Night, which was the March Flash Forward Book Club book! We talk about world building, character development, climate change, memory, trauma and more. She also answers questions from book club members!

🚨🚨🚨 IMPORTANT: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS! 🚨🚨🚨

I can't really overstate how many spoilers are in this conversation. Because this interview is mostly for folks in the book club, who have read the book, Charlie Jane and I talk about all kinds of things that happen in the book, including many, many spoilers. If you haven't read the book and want to avoid spoilers TURN BACK! DO NOT PRESS PLAY!

If you want to join the book club so you can ask questions of the authors in the future, and discuss the books with smart Flash Forward listeners, you can do that by joining at a $7+ level.

Thanks! This version won't have the GIFs or the animations but taken together it probably makes 95% of the talk. You can imagine the rest! I've trained you for this!

I didn't include the Q&A at the end because a lot of the question askers didn't use the mic so it's impossible to hear what their questions were.

Other notes: I share another secret on this episode! For every episode there will be one of these, where I talk unscripted (eek! terrifying!) about some of the ideas and topics that came up in the most recent episode. Sometimes these will include bits of interviews I couldn't use, other times they'll be me riffing on ideas and thoughts that I didn't find a place for in the episode.

This time I'm talking about the big ideas behind the upcoming season, the current status of Flash Forward ads sales, and some of my goals for the next year of the show.
Hi friends. I'm working on a little trailer to promote Flash Forward when it returns. I wanted to share the cut I have right now with you all, as a little behind the scenes thing. It's still rough, but I think it's fun.
It turns out remembering fun little one liners to pull for a trailer is hard! If you have any lines you remember loving from episodes please let me know! I should really keep track of those things while I'm cutting episodes, but of course I haven't.

Season Four drops March 27th! So soon! This month! Ack!
Hello patrons! I’m back with a little bonus bit that got cut from last week’s episode. Deceptible Me was all about self-deception, and the ways it pops up for good and for ill in our lives. There’s a form of self deception that I’m super fascinated by, but that I didn't have time to include: hypnosis. So here's a ~5 minute segment on hypnosis that I cut because the episode was getting kind of long.
If you want to hear more about the hynpnotist and the boy with the fish skin, here's the original paper about him from 1952. Radiolab also devoted a whole segment in their Placebo episode to him. And Mason also <ins>wrote a paper</ins> tracing his evolution from an anesthetist to a hypnotist that is worth reading.

Hope you enjoyed this cutting-room-floor snippet!

| |

This is my conversation with Ann Leckie. When we spoke, Ann was the author of Ancillary Justice, a fantastic book about space and identity lots of other stuff. You should just read it. By now, she’s the author of two more books in that trilogy, Ancillary Sword and Ancillary Mercy, which you should also check out!
I talked to Ann for season one episode 21, about a future where gender doesn’t matter. If you missed the episode, you can go back and listen to it via your podcasting app, or you can find it on Soundcloud or our website .
