HOWTO: Use WSL and its Git in a mixed development environment

How to setup a development environment where Git from WSL integrates with native Windows applications, using the Windows home folder as the WSL home and using Git from WSL for all tools.

Note if using Git for Windows, or any tool on the Windows side that does not use Git from WSL then there will likely be problems with file permissions if using those files from inside WSL.

Tools

These are the tools I use:

  • git (wsl) - Command line git from within WSL.
  • Fork (windows) - Git GUI (must be used with wslgit)
  • wslgit - Makes git from WSL available for Windows applications. Important! Follow the installation instructions and do (at least) the first optional step and then the Usage in Fork instructions.

How to Remove the Xbox Game Bar with Powershell on Windows 10. Scroll to the end of the gist for Windows 11.

You've probably stumbled upon this researching how to remove the Xbox Game Bar. This gist includes a few different methods you can try. Please note that some of these first options are probably not be available unless you are running an older version of Windows 10.

EDIT: make sure to check out the comment below from @nmhung1985 which seems to be working for most folks.

Uninstalling/Removing the Game Bar (old Windows 10 build GUI options)

(this is no longer an option on any recent Windows 10 build)

  1. Press Windows Key or click on the Start menu.
  2. Start typing Xbox or Game Bar, until you get the Xbox Game Bar app to appear in the results.

Git Submodules basic explanation

Git Submodules basic explanation

Why submodules?

In Git you can add a submodule to a repository. This is basically a repository embedded in your main repository. This can be very useful. A couple of usecases of submodules:

  • Separate big codebases into multiple repositories.

Properly download from github using wget and curl
wget --no-check-certificate --content-disposition https://github.com/joyent/node/tarball/v0.7.1
# --no-check-cerftificate was necessary for me to have wget not puke about https
curl -LJO https://github.com/joyent/node/tarball/v0.7.1
